In putzing around the web I came across a Raleigh Break-Away bike, the Grand Prix. Pretty interesting looking and pretty cheap, around $825 for a frameset with case.

Got me to wondering. Are there other companies making break-away bikes using the Ritchey couplers? I have a Ritchey break-away that rides as nice as my most expensive steel frame but it never has fit properly. I've looked for others but with no luck.

Is there any custom builders that use the Ritchey couplers?

Christopher Igleheart used to build Breakaways. Try contacting him to see if he still does.

Ritchey coupled is standard custom price = $990 plus $235 for Ritchey couplers:

I had Paul build 2 Hybrid BreakAway + S and S coupler Rocklobster frames. Someone else also commission him to build pretty much the exact same frame(and almost the same paint scheme).

We've had them on 2 international trips and they've been flawless.

Dahon licensed the break-away on their older road bike and I see some floating around on ebay from time to time. It says dahon, though :/

When Paul Taylor built my custom steel frame 8 years ago, I asked him to add Ritchey breakaway. The bike has gone on 3 international flights and 3 domestic flights. For the coupling on the seat tube, the paint on the surface that comes into contact will wear off easily and make the frame susceptible to rust.

I have two other S&S coupled bikes but neither of them have traveled.

In terms of design, functionality and longevity, S&S is superior.

If the price difference between the two different methods are not substantial, I would go with S&S for the new built.

The Jet. Bill has modified the couplers a bit with permission. This is a great system. Barely visible to the eye. I rode a Jet Exogrid of Bill's when I was demoing and detected nothing.

Jeff Lyon is building me his and hers 650B breakaway travel bikes. he did the Rapha continental bike as a breakaway: http://pages.rapha.cc/builders/jeffrey-lyon

taking this idea and adding in his 650B expertise for a light touring bike with fat rubber that can ride events like D2R2 and go to France, Japan, or San Fran just as easily
