View Full Version : Bring back the Combination Jersey!

Just saw a picture of the old "combination jersey", last awarded in 1989. LeBlanc says he eliminated it "to modernise" cycling, but I think it's another cool facet for those guys who aren't so specialized that they only do one thing well.

Could be organized so it rewards a true all-rounder and not just the 4th place finisher in one of the other jersey categories.

Always had an affinity for the patchwork nature of the jersey. Pretty legendary cast of characters won it over the years (Hinault, Lemond, Merckx, Zootemelk, etc.)

I have a feeling this is a pretty polarizing topic: people either love it or hate it, but I think injecting more interesting things like this to a 3 week race are cool.....better than that stupid "fastest descender" prize at the Giro

I want the fastest descender jersey.

What about a fastest hidden motor jacket?

Can't say I'm a big fan of the jersey look, but maybe it can be modernized a bit.

All in on the concept though.

If we are going to bring back old jerseys, I think the "lanterne rouge" last place jersey should be brought back. Seems hilarious to have pros trying to go as slow as possible without getting kicked out.

Also, I like the patch work style of the old combination jersey. I don't know how you would do it but it would be cool to try to reward an all-a-rounder somehow.

The closest was the maglia nera in the Giro. There's never been a lantern rouge jersey in the Tour afaik.

Combo jerseys only for those two lead multiple competitions. Then you stitch the two or three together to make that abomination.

Agreed....love this idea so people can track that guy easier. Also like the idea of the most aggressive guy getting a jersey too. The red number is ok, but a red jersey would be cool too.

That said, too many jerseys just means a lengthy post-race process and the race is prob trying to minimize that, but they already give the most combative a number so might as well give him a jersey. Not like they don't have the money....race winnings haven't changed in 15yrs, which is insane. ASO has to raking it in.

For the rider in the hunt on every stage regardless of terrain.

Wait, isn't the yellow jersey the best all rounder?

There was an actual jersey for last place?

Here .

That looks like a towel and a lantern. And neither given out by the Tour.

I don't ever remember a photo of a lantern rouge jersey a la the maglia nera.

Agreeing no 'jersey'..and that given to Luke Rowe. Lantern Rouge. By the Tour methinks.

The Tour de France never awarded a jersey to the last placed rider on gc. Only the Giro did that and only for a few years at that.

That was given to him by a Belgian reporter as part of an interview.

Last I read on the subject the ASO stopped recognizing it as an official thing in the late 70s, because of the negative racing it tends to encourage.

How do you "stop recognizing" it? Results are posted after each stage, and someone's got to be at the bottom of the list.

Ha...perfect timing.

I was literally just thinking this same thing the other day when I saw local phenom Brandon McNulty (remember that name people....heard it here first) take the leaders jersey in Tour of Alsace I thought to myself, "that multi color jersey on the mannequin is pretty legit"

They stopped acknowledging it as a thing, stopped selling sponsorship around it, all the ways a race organization pretends something doesn't exist.

Fans are free to track it of course, but its something ASO has no corporate interest in.

Matthews and Barguil would no longer be able to share a room together.

ASO voted Barguil as MVP of the tour. Isn't that the same thing as this jersey? Should have been deGent, but the frenchies need a hero. Badly.

The black jersey, maglia nera, was issued in the 1946-1951 Giro. The most famous winner of it was Giovanni Pinarello. In the 2008 edition the Giro brought back the idea of it but with a black number.

The Vuelta a EspaƱa has a combination jersey - their White jersey.

I believe it was re-introduced in 2005.
