View Full Version : Have you ever impulse-bought a bike you REALLY didn't need?

Some poor sap ripped off the derailleur tab on this fancy plastic bike. The carbone-repairman fixed it up good as new and was giving it away, for basically nothing.

I didn't really have a choice, right? Does this mean I need to get a disk wheel and start taking swimming lessons again?

I found the post and it takes any 1-1/8" straight steerer.

I've never been there. Nope. Not once that I'll admit. Don't count the 10 frames, 7 of which are complete bikes, plus 2 bikes and one frame for the lady at our place. Forget about the CAAD9 I left at a friend's in Cali just over 2 years ago so I don't need to travel with a bike to SD. Never buy anything impulsively.. hey that's a sweet frame for a good deal, I'll buy that..

ive done it with a Weigle and ill most likely do it again, most likely with a Weigle.

though a few other bikes would make me pull the trigger as well. for the first time in age, i actually am not looking at all for another bike, its weird actually.

Cool go fast machine!

I literally have not *needed* the last three or four bikes I bought so yes!

No, really, I am now getting ready to restore a civia from single speed commuter hipster form into an allroad gravel grinder....didn't need it at all, bought for $200 it satisfied my itch for a single speed (didn't like it) and now we'll see if it scratches that allroad/gravel itch.

I saw a new listing on the auction site for a Serotta HSG carbon. I put the first bid in, never expecting to get it. No one else bid. Oh, crap!
After building it up, the Ottrott saw less and less miles. It hasn't been off the hook this year.
No, I didn't need the HSG, but I sure do like it.

No, every one of the over 100 bikes I've owned were really.really needed to fill a void in my heart.

No, I haven't never bought a bike I didn't not really need. Nope. Not me.

I have however failed to recognize that time spent tinkering and buying/selling, even for fun stuff at great deals, is time taken away from actually riding - and that's a trade-off I'm not too excited about right now. Sun is shining in the PNW, I need to get out and use it!

I think the more relevant question is - have you ever bought a bike you really needed? I can answer that with a No for at least the last 20 years.

Great snag by the way.

I wonder how it would look with the only aero fork I have at home - a pink one.

I went a full 7 months without buying another frame to build up. It felt weird to me as well, but I now have an Italian steel bike to build up and all is right in the world again.

Did I need it? Nope, but I wanted it and I'm sure that I will enjoy putting it together and riding it for a while until I get the itch again:D

the speedvagen was a drunken impulse purchase.

I don't think it's weird, I think it is liberating. It is great to finally get off the merry-go-round.

If you're gonna chase another bike, make sure there's a reason why you're doin' it rather than the sheer opportunism of a deal that you've convinced yourself is too good to pass up. Bikes sold are like divorced partners - looks like something you really want but somebody else once thought just like you do now and can't wait to be rid of.

Having said this, we are all good at coming up with valid rationalizations for cycling addictions which is as valid an escape clause as any.

Answering to OP: No, I have never impulse bought a bike I REALLY didn't need 'cos I always thought I needed it when I bought it. Said George to Jerry: "It's not a lie if you believe it".

Me too.. and there are three others I am hoping the price becomes more reasonable on so that my life decisions become more difficult and stressful.. 😉

Sometimes a deal comes up that's so good, you "need" it. It's happened to me more than once. My irrationality has led to some bikes I've had a lot of fun riding. At this point, I really only look at very particular things to purchase anyway.

Barebones, though he oft posts in a facebook group I'm a member of. This was not the first attractive repair he's made, though it was the first that was ludicrously inexpensive and insurmountably unnecessary.

Naturally, I had to have it.

I guess i'm kind of lucky. Since everything I get in, I don't need. But I DO need. I need them for the showroom or show bikes or demos. Did I NEEEEED an Exemplar? Nope. BUT, i needed one for shows. And it won at NAHBS. So I guess it was a good thing.

After Trek bought Klein there were Klein Adroit frames available for less than the front fork wholesaled for. I bought a great tri color one. Until my wife found out.

Yes. More than once. The shine goes off of them real quick and they end up as coat racks, then quickly find there way to e-bay.

an Oval Jetstream A900 would look awesome on that frame. Drew does nice work and knows what he's doing. Good pick up

Oh and Errr, never had an impulse buy on a bike frame. that's probably why I have three in boxes waiting for a build that may or may not ever happen :)

Sort of, I bid on a Bianchi Infinito that I had no intention on winning. Guess what, when I checked the next day I was the owner of a new Bianchi. Turns out it is one of my all time favorite riding bikes.

ditto on SV. Addictive snappiness but meh stock fit and weird SM paint. Sold painfully low and now sworn off of ISPs.

but that Vamoots CR I picked up last year is working out way better than expected.

I bought one of those as a Sr. in HS working at a Trek/Klein (and Schwinn) LBS. Can't remember exactly what I paid, but I feel like it was $400 with the Judy SL...size XL. Goddam do I wish I still had that bike!
