View Full Version : Rims for wider tires

A buddy of mine who often rides his bike in to work is looking for some info on going to wider tires (say 700 x 28 or 32) for his commuter. According to Sheldon Brown here (http://www.sheldonbrown.com/tire_sizing.html) (the color table all the way at the bottom of the page) he should probably not use a 13mm wide rim, but go with at least a 15mm, if not wider. That eliminates OPs and most commonly available rims that we typically use.

What rims do you 'cross types use when you are running a 28 or 32 tire?

TIA

Look into Salsa Delgado Cross rims... a little like OPs on steroids. Metaphorically speaking, of course, cause they're a little wider. I like mine.

Interesting.

I had never seen or even considered this before. For what it's worth the Mavic Site (http://www.mavic.com/ewb_pages/p/piste_produit_jante_OPEN_PRO.php?onglet=3&gamme=route) says that OP are good for 28's up to 117 PSI

A friend has been running 32's on Easton Circuits for commuting all year and has not had a problem.

I routinely ride 32-35c tires on OP rims, and if you order a bike from Singer in Paris you find out that they think the same thing...it's OK.

I'm just sayin' this is what I do. YMMV.

A) Try a tandem rim. Our tandem has Velocity rims and they are great.

B) See Tall, Too, How to build a set of clincher wheels that ride almost as good as tubulars, Serotta Forum Press, 2006. You can find it here: http://forums.thepaceline.net/showthread.php?t=20758

I'm always running the Riv Rolly-Polly/Ruffy-Tuffy tires (nominal 28s) on both OPs and RR1.1s at pressures > 100psi. And of course there's wiiiide 32mm Michelin cross tires, but they aren't at those sorts of pressures.

For low-bling wheels, I've used the olde reliable Sun CR18 to good effect.

edit: I should say I've got RP/RTs on OPs, RR1.1s _and_ Velocity Aeroheads

I also run Ruffy-Tuffies on Velocity Aeroheads. Very satisfied so far.

Thanks for the info guys.

I just sent my buddy a link to this thread.

I have run Michelin 700x32 cross tires on OP rims--no problem.

So let me flip this around. Is an OP really an appropriate rim for a commuter? If you're going to be running 32-35-37 tires (Paselas, etc), running into potholes, etc, wouldn't a wider (and cheaper!) rim be better.

Again, maybe a CR18, or the Velocity touring rim? MA3?

I run cross tires on Mavic Open Pros and Velocity Aeroheads with no issue whatsoever.

On my cross bike, I run two types of tires on my Mavic Open Pros:

For commuting:
Conti Top Touring 2000 (http://www.conti-tyres.co.uk/conticycle/ti%20top%20touring%202000.shtml). 32mm. With reflective white sidewall for style and visiblity.

For offroad:
Michelin Mud 2 (http://two-wheels.michelin.com/2w/front/affich.jsp?codeRubrique=2092004115406&codePage=2092004115406_10092004150554&lang=EN). 30mm (but ride like 34mm).

Have had no problems at all.

I commute 22 miles round trip on a set of Mavic A719 36 hole w/ 105 hubs. They work great. I've mounted Conti Ultra Gatorskins and Bontrager Satellite hard case tires, will put Conti Top Touring on next.

Wow...I've been abusing my OPs on dirt roads/Michigan potholes/trails with those Richey speed max cross tires for almost two years now. Shame on me.

Is that chart for clinchers or tubulars?

Although I agree that some mountain bike tires really should be run on wider rims as the handling does get sloppy if they're all balooned out on too narrow of a rim.
