My wife and I have 2 bikes that we kept inside our 1 bedroom apartment. We left it rigth next to our TV but since the baby is coming, we need to find a way for the baby not to get all over chain gunk. Any suggestions?

Put some hooks in the ceiling and hang 'em up.

I think you'll need to get some kind of rack with a wide platform, and maybe a guard so that the baby doesn't roll off and hurt him/herself. :D

You have plenty of time. Your baby will not move from where you put him/her for about 5-6 months. By then, a solution will reveal itself.

Yeah, by then you will have moved to Cucamonga to rent a 2BR apartment for the same rent you were paying in Los Angeles.

i was thinking of fencing around it with ply wood but in and out would be too difficult...

I guessed that but a 1 br with a kid is tough. Can people find reasonable rents along the subway line and avoid the traffic nightmare?

When baby comes all current needs and wants will suddenly become subordinated to managing chaos, at least for a while.

The wait and see approach is a good one.

When I had to do the same thing, I picked up two Cycloc (http://cycloc.com/ps/bike-storage-systems/1-cycloc-solo.html) holders -- they looked good, bikes hung, helmets lived on top and gloves within. Neat, clean, cool design, off the floor and out of the way. While hanging bikes might not be optimal for your wife, it's really the best solution to protect the little ones.

if the bike is within reach, getting greasy hands is the least of your worries.

do you want your kids fingers caught between the chain and the chain ring or cog? pull the bike down on top of him/her and take a pedal into the eye?

a kid learning to stand and climb and walk will find a way to do things you never thought of. There was a reason our Christmas tree ornaments started three feet off the ground for a few years.

you have some time to figure this out...

Do you have a secure deck or porch or basement storage?

We were in the same situation about two years ago. We were living in a one bedroom apt. with our 9 month old when we were looking for a house.

We had our two MTB's with us in the apartment. I tried blocking them off, but it didn't really work. As you will soon discover, babies are magnets to danger.

Like mentioned previously you could hang them up or get some kind of bike locker like this:
https://cyclesafe.com/product-category/bike-lockers/

Then you could store them outside?

Good luck

You are going to be fine until baby is mobile. After that, just get them off the ground a bit and you are good until you hit toddler stage, at which point they will find a way to get to the bike if they want to.

I wonder how much they are...
I don't even know where I can store them...
I was thinking of making a box which can be served as a diaper changing station/bike storage but too much work... but may be necessary. thank you!

No need to overreact and no need to pre-emptively child-proof everything in sight. The consumer market loves to prey and foster these unknowns with new parents in selling all manners of stuff to deal with fears both real and imagined.

You've got time to figure it out.

Raising a toddler in an apartment is still within the confines of manageable space so they will never get far out of eyesight. No need to helicopter parent, just be vigilant. To display or wallow in some level of nervousness or high-strung is to convey this to a toddler. And they pick up on everything so be mindful as to what you imprint to them about behaviour.

If his wife objects to hanging the bikes, she's probably going to object to putting the baby on the deck or in the basement.
