The Giro Rosa is famous for course profiles that bear little resemblance to the real thing. Today the women are riding an ITT and this is the official profile:

While this is the actual one:

459 meters of altitude gain in 12.7km with one section at 30%....that's one crazy ITT. If you recall the 2013 Tirreno-Adriatico where several riders walked a section of uphill it's the same climb.

Looks like the same profile, just with more or less vertical exaggeration/scale.

Now, the second is a lot more informative with the colored gradients...

Sure, there's a passing resemblance. But if I was given the first profile there's no way that I would think it meant there was 1500ft of climbing in 7.9 miles.

The footage I saw of this race today showed a lot of road bikes, and not a lot of TT bikes.

I can't imagine riding these hills on a TT bike.

The route profile is silly but don't they all go preview the route on a TT before hand. It's 8 miles. Someone on the team has to have ridden it.

https://cyclingtips.com/2017/07/giro-rosa-stage-5-riders-struggle-with-surprise-climbs-in-the-itt/AvV was on her TT bike...but yeah, most were on normal bikes with aero bars. BTW the full video is up now, I'm not sure if it was earlier when you posted.

Those who have ridden the Giro Rosa before definitely don't put a lot of stock in the official profiles.

While it may have seemed that my point was the inconsistent profile, that really wasn't the emphasis of my post. I thought this was about the craziest route I've ever seen for an ITT....insanely steep climbs.

I agree it is a bad TT route. I can see some climbing, but a 30% pitch is ridiculous. Maybe in a hilly stage but not a TT

In the ITT Annemiek van Vleuten had an amazing ride but along the way she dropped the chain. She kept moving slowly and the mechanic was able to get it back on while she was still moving...I'm not sure that I've ever seen that done before.

You can see it in Orica's 'Backstage Pass' video - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MYRE978HZ88 If you don't want to watch the entire video start at the 2:45 mark.

Nice video especially the chain fix. A very tough TT stage. Annamiek is a badass bike rider. Interesting that she was one of a few on her TT bike.

I really enjoy following the Giro though I wish there was more coverage - I get most of my updates on Cycling Tips who seem to have good coverage of women's racing. I'm happy to see Guarnier riding well after her early season health issues - hoping she makes the podium. And wish Evie Stevens was still riding. Boels-Dolman still looks very powerful but it seems the other teams are very strong too with a variety of stage winners so far. Great race.

Tomorrow's stage 7 looks to be another good one.

I just listened to the VoxWomen podcast in which they interview Mara Abbott and discuss her experiences racing the Giro Rosa. She mentions having to use a service like "ride with GPS" to map the routes herself and examine the elevation because those profiles are so skewed :D :crap:
