What rim brake rims would you guys suggest for going this size tire? I was thinking of an a23 or similar but wondered if they are wide enough.

Definitely wide enough. I run 40c WTB Nanos on H Plus Son Archetypes to great effect. Huge improvement over 19mm external width rims. Archetypes seem more durable than an A23 but are not ("officially") rated for tubeless setups.

I had 25mm HED Belgium Plus for a while, and they were great as well, but depending in canti stud location, may be more difficult to set up brakes with the added width.

I'm a fan of the HED Belgium Plus as well. I'm a big dude (270+) and I've been racing CX and gravel on a set for more than 4 years with only a couple times needing truing. 28 hole only because they weren't available in 32, but haven't felt like I would have needed them anyway.

Agree.^^ I have the Belgium+ 28/28 dt350 it's been just a fantastic setup for 35-42mm for me.. Also have a23 and run 35's perfectly well.

I was running WTB Nano 40s on HED Belgium+ rims with good results. I am now running the Nano 2.1 on Stans Arch EX with no noticeable loss of tire capability. In hindsight I would have used the Velocity Blunt rims but oh well.

Plenty wide enough as are DT411/440/511. H+Son Archetypes also.

I've been very happy with my Kinlin XR31T OC (http://www.bikehubstore.com/Kinlin-XR31T-p/xr31t.htm) rims.

Thanks you guys! I am leaning toward the H Plus son since I have had great experiences with it and the price is very competitive.

Pacenti wides would also get my vote.

All y'all are overthinking this: stick them tires on what you have and ride your bike.

I've ridden that size tires on anything from Open Pros to new wide tubeless Bontragers. They feel like tires.

I am just rebuilding some wheels due to wear.

Then if you're re-building the wheels, tubulars are more better than both clinchers and tubeless. I've ridden 5 Hilly Billy-s on 2 pair of tubulars now. First 3 were on the same pair of tires! Tufo Dry 32s are diurable despite their 'less than desirable' ride quality

I've had good luck with my Boyd Altamont Lites and with various Pacenti rims, most recently the Forza.

The Boyds came from Boyd Cycling directly in the form of actual wheels and the Pacenti rims I had built by Mr. Ergott.

I'm not running wide tubulars so that's not much of a question. I'm tempted again to try some but my last experiment with FMB 28 Paris-Roubaix was not to my liking. At low pressure they seemed squishy and imprecise.

I'm on board with wide clinchers (at least up to 25....... which is hardly wide anymore) but not so much on the tubulars. Probably need to evolve there a bit.
