View Full Version : ISO a 'cool' helmet

Alright you guys in Arizona!!

'Cool' as in temp, not 'cool' looking necessarily. Also, no back pieces like pictured..the over the back parts of the helmet that hit my Rx sunglass 'ears' that can't be bent. I have a Mavic Syncro which is OK in the sunglasses department but 'cool' it ain't. So, whatcha got?

I'd LOVE to not wear anything riding alone but the 'boss' says nope to that..oh well.

I have the same problem With my Mojito. Other than the sunglass issue, I really like the helmet.
My other helmet is a Rudy Project Sterling. They often run specials and have industry discounts. No problem with glasses.

Same issue here too. I like the fit and all of the Mojito but that massive retention strap pushes my glasses forward and they are Rx.
Luckily I have these others to choose from that don't push my glasses:

Bell Volt
Giro Aeon
Lazer Genesis
Las Victory
Salice Ghibli

Catlike Whisper. No interference with glasses, cooler than anything else I've owned; only downside is that putting glasses on the helmet for storage. I've never lost a pair but am always concerned that I will.

I liked my Mojito except the fit was more for round head shapes and mine is more oval. I found the Protone was indeed a better fit, but it is also considerably cooler. The only thing I am not happy with is the cheapo front sweat pad, which delaminates. I just use a Sweat Buster (http://www.traxfactory.com/) in place of the OEM pad. The other pads are first rate, as well as the helmet overall.

I hear you on the glasses.
If it fits your head shape, the specialized prevail and airnet has good clearance.
Giro aeon also has good clearance.
The Met Rivale also does well in that temporal lobe clearance so it won't interfere with regular glasses.

FWIW, no helmets are cool....but, my spec prevail was cool as a cucumber. I realize it is a spec product, which offends some here, but it was always a damn good cool helmet.

I can attest to the fact that the Spec Prevail II helmet has great ventilation, even better than the previous gen which was already very good. It's lightweight, fits nicely, is reasonably low noise (lower than previous model), and ventilates very well. The sweat management feature is a bit overstated although it does function to a point.

Specialized makes it easy, just order one and try for 30 days. If you don't like it, send it back for a refund. If you favorite helmet maker won't do this, then it's time to change.

Funny! All helmets look like sh+#, imho. Necessary evil, but I are a simple soldier. My noggin is not mine to make decision on. And NO not trying to start any kind of helmet ya/nay thread. :help:

+1 for Giro Aeon. Mine worked great, that is until I broke it in a crash. I replaced it with a POC raceday MIPS. It doesn't look as good as the Giro, and I'm not sure it ventilates as well either. I wanted the MIPS feature, which is not available on the Aeon.

Never had a helmet move more air around my noggin than Catlike. And comfy too. Another vote for the Mixino.

I have a couple of Giros that fit me a bit better better, but on a hot day I always go for my Catlike, you can feel the breeze like on no other helmet that I have used

The Protone isn't too bad on the cooling side, but kinda has a issue with the glasses just like the mojito but not as bad IMO

Limar Ultralight hits all the right notes. Light, well vented and no back piece...
Has become my no. 1 helmet of choice. Shape more oval than Catlike or Giro Aeon.

And I thought POCs were ugly. Form follows function I suppose.

I agree that all helmets look dumb. But, so do hats on my head. Lightweight and max air flow are key and that Catlike looks like it would feel good. Looking forward to your report.

My current Giro helmet is dark grey. Is there data that indicates a white helmet is appreciably cooler?

Like a dark jersey in the sun..can't be cooler, all else being equal. Yes? But never owned anything but white..helmets.

As long it is comfortable and doesn't look like a giant mushroom I'm good. LG's fit, comfort along with great value work for me. Also I always wear a hat, hot or cold,in hot weather it keeps the sweat from my eyes and acts like a radiator when descending ( I do lots of climbing) in cold added layer to protect my dome.

Firs well, very adjustable, doesn't interfere with glasses, 'neck sausage' doesn't make it rotate forward. 'Seems' cooler, 87 degrees, I know, a cold snap for you AZ and TX guys. Still a helmet tho. I'll keep it. Cooler than Mavic, fits better than Lazer.

Got a met rivale and the m.of.o is super cool, 1st time I put my hand in the back of a helmet holes and actually feel the breeze coming through out, happy with it but kind'a triky to fit due to my weird a r s head shape.

Giro Aeon is the best vented helmet I've ever used, better than the Synthe that came after and the Prevail I had before... Obviously you got it taken care of but I'm an Aeon fanboy.

Had an Aeon then a Synthe. Both 'seemed' way to 'substantial', bulky. I know, helmets like bib shorts, YMMV,++.

I wear it cuz I gots too. Without trying to start a 'helmet' argue-thread. Did take it off going up the hwy 36 MUP back into Boulder...nuthin beats non... put it back on coming down the hill.:hello:

Though I love my Catlike Whisper (vents very well and I do quite like the mushroom aesthetics) I did not like the retention system. Felt that it dug a bit on the back of my neck. Modded a Bell retention (on the Volt) onto the Catlike and now it is PERFECT!

that caught my interest as Lazers have been my go-to for fit... Hmmm...

Not if your willing to experiment! I actually ordered a spare retention system for $8 and then simply cut the little securing tabs out and super-glued them onto the bell retention system straps. It was pretty easy and since I didn't plan on using the Catlike retention system, had no qualms about wasting it. Optimally, I would have LOVED to put a Louis Garneau Spiderlock on it.

Interesting, we should put a hack thread for helmets, so we post what we did to make them work.

The kask k50 I have all the retention system is screwed into the helmet, just 4 screws and you can remove it right away, put it in another helmet is just screw back into a new one and good to go.

Peter,

I just got an aftermarket replacement pad set for my Catlike Whisper. It improves the fit dramatically.

A seller named sprinterln has them on the bay. (That is a lowercase L)

Didn't know they even existed until recently.

When I used to import a line of Italian helmets, we did some testing to see if outer shell color impacted internal temperature against the head and the difference while measurable, was effectively within the standard deviation.
