It's the middle of winter here and my MIL has given me a thermos flask with a pull out nozzle that will fit in a bottle cage after she had a clear out of her cupboards. I've thought about filling it with a brew before I head out the door on the cold winter mornings. Does anyone else do this - any pro's or cons? Does it keep you nice and warm or do you just need to keep taking pit stops.

I have done it on cold, below freezing winter rides. I take a small 12 oz kleen canteen of coffee in my pocket for the destination. Its nice to warm the core a bit.
I am still very careful to hydrate during winter rides. My brain dosent ask for fluids as much and its easy to forget and get behind on my water.

Try it.. do what works for you. I like to tool along the Torrens River path and stop at some point for a brain cleansing think. A thermos of coffee would be most welcome.

Got a path along the Swan?

A few times, and it was always appreciated.

To me it depends on the ride. If I am headed out to hammer then no. If it is a mellow effort then it would be welcome. Hmmm I am going to go get some coffee now lol.

Yep, in early spring I was carrying coffee and hot cocoa in Contigo brand travel mugs. They fit in king iris cages perfectly.

Contigo fits nice, is fully sealed and won't spill, and also stays hot for HOURS!

only time I tried it was on a snow bike ride, well below freezing. there was absolutely nobody out and it was super peaceful and serene. it was awesome to stop every now and then and drink a small cup.

when i used to commute regularly, i would take a water bottle full of iced coffee, and it was really a great treat on the way to work during the summer months. i say: "why not"! with the hot stuff in the cold.

when commuting, i keep the coffee in a kleen canteen so I don't have to drink the kuerig stuff at work..

I found an insulated camelbak on the road a few years ago. Cleaned it up and made it into my coffee only bottle. It's pretty freakin great to have coffee during commutes.

Good Morning. On my winter rides rides which are maybe an hour to two hour base miles rides I put tea, lemon, and honey in a water bottle and drink it while riding. The tea stays hot for awhile and a side benefit is the water bottle makes a great hand warmer. If I have coffee I would rather stop at a cafe and enjoy it inside.
Have a great day

I do when commuting year-round.

I did find, however, that the metal Hydro Flask I use rattled incessantly, so I put a couple of beer can koozies around it and that kept it quiet and added some insulation. Works well in flexible battle cages, but not thick inflexible ones (Lezyne, in my case).

For actual riding, I'd probably prefer warm herbal tea to avoid a acid-y stomach and my unfounded and persistent belief that caffeine will dehydrate me.

I don't know how cold it gets in Oz, but for below freezing temps, my 17oz Stanley thermos goes in my back pocket, not in a cage and it more than doubles the stay hot time. In my case strong gunpowder tea saturated with honey, makes any pit stop worth it. Anyway, in real cold weather everything shuts down, I never have to pee until I'm somehow within sight of the front door, then it's a race to get inside...

In winter here, I usually have a canteen of strong, sweet tea in one cage.

I've never ridden with anything but water. It's kind of fun to see/hear peoples' reactions on a cold winter day when you arrive at work with your water bottle frozen solid. :)

I used to ride with one of these for my commute and occasionally for a longer ride in the winters. Sadly the lid died and it's been discontinued. On the up side they warrantied it with a new vacuum mug. Not as nice imho, but still good.
