View Full Version : Shim material to mount 31.8 accessory clamps on 26.0 bars?

I need some kind of shim to mount the Barfly for my Garmin on 26.0 bars. All the out front mounts seem to be for 31.8 bars so they would need a shim(about 3mm or 0.125" thick) to mount on 31.8 bars. Figured someone here has already solved the problem.

I tried some silicone rubber I had but it wasn't firm enough and the Garmin started shaking really bad on a rough road. Then I tried some 0.125" cork gasket material but it doesn't grip the bars and slides around. Need something else, what did you use?

Thanks

Jack

Problem Solvers makes stem clamp shims so you can use 26.0 bars with 31.8 stems. Used one for years with no problem, should be less than $10.

Shims to adapt 26.0 mm to 31.8 mm handlebars and accessories already exist, like this one:

The Garmin out front mount comes with a shim and it holds my Garmin on top and a headlight below without issue. I had it out on a single track (Garmin only I think) and it was fine.

You can also take a 1" threadless headset spacer, cut it into two halves, and voila! You will want to file down the corners after cutting so it doesn't rip up your handlebar.
