View Full Version : Chris King R45 rear hub from 10 to 11, possible?

Hi all,

Perused the CK website, but didn't get this answer. Is it possible? And, if so, is it a DIY job or need special tools ( bike store job )?

Any idea of the cost of parts?

possible yes, you need a new hub and a minor redish. easy enough to do at home, but expensive.

edit: they are hard to find for less than retail anywhere from what i've seen, and this price makes the conversion cost prohibitive IMO. i think it's a crap move on CK's part to make these conversion hubs so expensive when there was only a short fun of 10-sp only hubs before they went over to 11. they should really make it cheaper for the early R45 adopters to go to 11.

There's a slightly cheaper option since you don't need to replace the axle. It's driveshell and another part. Give me a few to find an old thread....

Found it:

That kit is overkill, you don't need the R45 driveshell WITH bearings (assuming your driveshell bearing is fine), you can reuse the one you already have. You need PHB762 (driveshell no internals) for $79 and PHB761 (rear axle) for $79. Even King sells the kit direct (PHB764) with all internals for $229.

that's interesting, i didnt realize they sold hubshells without bearings. this is still not a straightforward swapover, that's for sure.

^driveshell not hubshell, angry. yep, they make it more complicated than necessary. but when this happened to my r45 campy rear:

CK promptly replaced the driveshell (with internals/bearings) and o-rings. So, it seems that they prefer to think of the driveshell and internals/bearings as one part although they sell the driveshell as a hollow unit (no bearings), PHB762.

My understanding is both the axle and drive shell need to be replaced. Do not know if you are doing Shimano or Campy. The picture way up above is a Campy/Shimano conversion

Cheap option is to wait for the 8000 Ultegra 11-34 and it'll fit on your 10spd cassette body!

the conversion kit makes it pretty easy to do with no special tools, other than hex wrenches. oh, and some spoke wrenches, a dishing tool and a truing stand for the redish, but you'll have that either way.
