If you assume the tape measure is perpendicular to the stems quill, and that it has 17deg rise, you can use the law of sines to calculate the length of the stem.

yabbut...parallax distortion...where does the tape measure start with respect to the quill centerline?

why go thru all these hoops to infer the stem's reach? the whole point of getting a direct measurement is to establish the reach with certainty, yes?

Nitto had or have? some track stems that are measured strainght instead of going on top of the stem, other brands did the same.

Guessing they measured from centerline of quill though.
