View Full Version : Wheel decals. Should they stay? Should they go?

The bike already looks like a billboard. I can live with that. The wheels seem to out it over the edge. Huge decals that really seem to junk it up. Looks Nascar and I dint really care for the look.
So, what do the paceliners think? Do you care for billboard decals? I am not iverly concerned with resale.

Thoughts?
Maybe black decals?

Black is nice, but I don't really like loud logos on wheels.

When I built up the Ahearne with ENVE rims my local shop owner couldn't believe it as he watched me peel those suckers off.

Probably would have kept them if they were black.

For me it depends on the decals. Some look good, others not so much.

I have always removed any decals that peel off (i.e. anything above the clearcoat).

Its impossible to say. A bit like should my bike have black handlebar tape? Well maybe ? :)

Pics please

I think it depends on the frame, actually.

Some of the..."louder" frames look good with wheel decals:

Most of the stuff on this forum looks much better blacked out/removed:

Taste is so subjective and personal. That first bike looks like a rolling disaster to me; the second one on the other hand...

no decals, get rid of any and all

I'm not going to disagree with you on the first one, but hard to argue that the decals don't "fit" on that bike.

I remove decals on all my rims before building them up. That's one reason I haven't built up any HED rims as I've read they are extremely difficult to remove.

I'm of the opinion that at a bike looks best with one, maybe two, "brands" showing. If deep-section wheels don't match the component group or finishing kit (stem/post especially), then they should just be blacked out. Likewise, better to black out the stem/post than have mismatched loud logos on them. So, Bora's with SR11 and Deda/3T finishing kit, leave the logos and get all of them in the same colorway (bright vs. dark label, etc.). All personal taste though, and that's mine :)

The weird thing is I'm not an unconditional decal-hater -- I think it varies by case and I actually happen to love Zipp decals, especially when they're in motion. Case in point, my bike:

As nice as that looks...it would still look better without the stickers...

I only leave decals if the frame does not have enough visual interest to stand on its own...or if i plan on re-selling the wheels (because people get all weird about that sh*t)...which means I pretty much always end up just leaving the wheels as I get em, sometimes with and sometimes without.

I get that viewpoint. The bike is pretty busy as is, visually speaking, so one could argue the wheel decals don't add anything to that

completely depends on the frame IMO.

My last black and white supersix had a lot of "Cannondale" and "Supersix" logo's on it. I had enve classic 45's with White enve stickers on the wheels. I later decided to take the logo's off and it looked so much better.

My current Evo Hi mod is all black with ghosted cannondale logo's that can barely be seen. I've gotten new Enve 4.5's with black ghosted logo's and I've kept them on and I think it looks perfect.

Just like everything else when it comes to matching items, it needs a fine balance.

here is my old supersix. To me, I wish I would have taken the logo's off sooner as it looks very busy.

I think the green pave's go before the Zipp stickers go

I peeled my Zipp decals (the last gen, before the latest stickers which look impossible to remove). Took patience and a hair dryer, but it was worth it. Most companies offer a stealthier option now on their wheels.

My opinion is that if you are given the wheels, then billboard. If you pay for them, they should make it easy to make them whatever color you like, or omit the decals altogether.

If you can remove it, you should. Save some gram yo plus it gives the bike a cleaner line.

When it comes to decals, jerseys, sponsorship shtick, etc this is where road cyclists have so much common with NASCAR.

Had a bike with ho hum Reynolds Solitude wheels. First, removed the Solitude decals, though Solitude can be a great thing. Later, removed the Reynolds decals. Bike had Ultegra group, removed all those decals. Lastly, got rid of the bike. Nice bike though;)
