View Full Version : switch my wound up for a whisky #7

Just bought a bike with a would up commuter fork, its a cool fork, takes big tires, fender mounts, ect. It looks ok on the bike (Hampsten Strada Bianca), I like the silver since the brakes are silver.

However, the weight limit on those forks are kind of low and I am around the weight limit mark, a little more some days  ( I am working on it though). The fork also weights a ton (I don't really care about this but if I am going to have a carbon fork, would not mind if it was a bit lighter).

Enter the whisky #7. Clearance for big tires, fender mounts, probably 300g lighter, no weight limit. It seems perfect. However I am wondering if I can put one on and keep the geometry the way it is, I don' have the geo chart on this bike but can probably request it. What do I need to look for in order to make sure the whisky #7 would work on this?

Axle to crown and fork rake. I'm sure it will work. It's unlikely they'll differ by more than a couple mm in either dimension.

I will find the geo for the bike. Or do we know if the current fork rake is is printed somewhere on the wound up fork?`

The Commuter fork comes in 3 different rakes. A-C is 376mm and the No. 7 road fork is 375mm with 45mm rake.

My guess would be that you have the 46mm rake version if the bike's HTA is ~73d. In that case you will not notice a change in handling. Even if you have the 41mm or 49mm offset, in this instance the change in handling would be very minimal and no more material than going from a 28mm to a 32mm tire or vice versa.

If you want to know exactly how much change to HTA, trail and wheelbase get me the HTA, tire size and fork rake of the Wound Up (difficult to measure accurately but I suspect it's marked on the fork steerer).

If there is a ser.# Woundup would know , check steering tube.

The WoundUp Commuter comes in 41mm, 46mm and 49mm rakes, all with 376mm Axle to Crown. However they also do custom geos (I have a 45mm / 380mm). Specs aren't printed anywhere (typically) but there should be a serial number inscribed on the steerer above the crown race. An email to WoundUp should get a reply with the specs.

The Whiskey #7 Road Plus is 45mm / 375mm so if your WoundUp is a 46mm / 376mm you will be fine.

My old Wound Up has a sticker on the steerer with specs. Weight limit on WU forks? That's news to me, I'd better give that a look-see.

good call bobswire. I will check it out this weekend.

@ColonelJLloyd - I will see if I can find it. The info I need might even be on the fork, I have to look. But good to know that it should not change much. Thanks for the help.

@Look585 - I will look for the serial. Thank you!

@donevwill - Its funny, they all have weight limits which is silly for such an over built fork. The thing is over 600g. I would probably be fine but to me its not worth it and I think the whisky will actually look better (I do like the wound up fork look though)

Where did you find the limits? I just covered the WU site and didn't find anything. Then again I may need another cup of coffee.

230#? Yikes!

I must be losing it, every link to a spec I found on the site opens the PDF the Colonel posted.

Seems low to me weight wise.

I think I like my whisky 9. Haven't actually ridden it yet. Bike is still in the shop for the brakes to get connected and bled and steerer cut. Few of the only things I'm not set up to do at home. It's well built and finished nicely.

seems low to me too but its what they say so I will take their word.

I mean, the enve forks are 350g with no weight limit and are full carbon.

Oh well, if it works out, I will have it for sale in the classified

He's talking about the rim brake fork.

I know. My inspection of the 9 seems on par with the 7's both road and cross, disc, canti, and rim break that I've handled from a quality/construction standpoint.

yeah its good to know the quality is good. I never ridden one, or even seen one.

The only carbon forks I have ridden are enve, which have been great. If they made a mid reach fork I would probably buy it.

OBTW I also have a Whisky 7 fork as I have the latest Mr Pink. It's solid.

I guess in some ways I'm glad I put that little bug in your ear about this fork maybe working. I'm pretty dang surprised at the Wound Up deal myself; I've always considered them to be severely overbuilt.

damn you! But I think it will be better.

I do think the wound up fork is overbuilt but who knows where they came up with the 230lbs max weight
