I'm a huge fan of his—I hope he recovers, but this sounds really bad...

He won the hearts of us in Indy when he showed up for the first Indy MotoGP in a Colts helmet. It was a terrible day for racing and he raced spectacularly, leading a good bit of the race.

Not good. Nobody is safe on the roads.

Dayum.....it doesn't sound good at all.

Early reports from Italy have it that before being life-flighted to a hospital better suited to his injuries, American Nicky Hayden was diagnosed with both a suspected “thoratic polytrauma” and a suspected traumatic brain injury (TBI).

This is the worst. Such a fan, and a family friend. Mega bummer.

I saw Nicky Hayden when he was a punk kid riding at Laguna Seca. One of the most natural riders I have ever seen. Get well soon.

This sucks, Nicky is a good guy. I met him years ago at Road Atlanta. He finished his race and came out to watch one of his brothers race. He hung out on the hill side and talked to us as his brother rode. I'm currently wearing a Hayden Brothers T-shirt that all 3 of them signed. I wish him the best.

Didn't sound good at the time of the crash, and it looks like the worst has been confirmed. Hayden is dead at 35.

Back when I was into motorcycles, he was one of my favorites to watch. Rest in peace. Prayers are with the family (and fiancé). What a tragic way to go, and at such a young age.

I'm wondering if the accounts of the accident has been confirmed. Seems he'd have a bit more situational awareness to blow through a stop sign and get t-boned by a car.

man this just sucks. As a fan yeah I am bummed, but he was a good mentor to many and form what I have read and witnessed a really good hearted guy.

So incredibly sad. I was at Laguna when he won his championship. I knew didn't sound good but was hoping for the best. RIP Nicky Hayden, you will be missed.

Very close knit family. They must be devastated. I met the dad at Moto GP a few years back. Doubt if there's a friendlier, more humble, or more down home kind of guy than Mr. Hayden. I've watched Nicky race as well as listen to his commentary and he came across as much the same as his dad. How very sad.

Seems we've been hearing of a lot of cyclists killed in these senseless tragedies lately. I wish it would stop.

Think it was covered in the other thread... but RIP.

I have been out of motorcycling for about 5 years now.. I got out of it when my wife was pregnant with our son.

But I always considered myself a Honda guy, I mostly considered Hayden a Honda guy for the longest time too, and I was definitely a fan, he seemed like a class act who never exhibited some of the dangerous/bad behavior other racers at his level would succumb to. Great to his sponsors too.

Terrible way to go out and such irony when everyone is constantly saying motorcycling is too dangerous and yet never worries about us bicycling.

Boy isnt that the truth, lately? So many riders killed over the last few months, both famous and not. It's pretty discouraging.

More than likely it was something like that. Judging by pictures and video there are few other plausible explanations for him simply being run over from behind like that.

I mean in general. The chances of a driver passing and texting is so high these days. When did we get so comfortable multitasking like that at the expense of safety to ourselves and others?

FWIW, it's starting to look like Nicky ran a stop sign and went into the path of the car at speed. The driver is very likely not at fault here.

This is just terrible news. The guy just loved two wheeled machines. I think it would have been amazing to try and follow a guy like this down a mountain pass on a bicycle. I doubt you'd be able to keep his wheel for long. The irony of his death strikes me. To survive one of the most dangerous sports in the world only to be killed enjoying his pastime. Sad day.

So saddened by his passing. It sucks any time a person that loves two wheels is killed doing something they love.

He will be missed. Prayers and condolences to the family and all his loved ones.
