I'm going to be in Monterey for a few days later this month will have a wide open day available. Can anyone suggest a place to rent a decent road bike for a day? Any particular routes that I should consider if I've got only one chance to do it right?

I'll second Charles' recommendation. I usually start on the Bay Trail at Marina, ride up through Fort Ord, through 17 mile drive, and stop for lunch at the Pebble Beach store, which has a little pick-nick area around the back (and some pretty decent burritos). If I recall, it's like a 41 mile round trip, and the views riding along the ocean are stunning. It can get a little crowded certain times of the year when you get into Monterey, but during the week it shouldn't be too bad.

I ride this route every year with friends who live in the area. Well actually, we go thru pebble beach and then onto 17 mile drive. We stop for a break at the little deli for a nature break. The we continue on thru to carmel valley. We stop there for a bite and then head back. oh my gosh it's lovely ride

We look forward to it every year.

If you're not swinging through Walnut Creek, can't ride a 57cm or otherwise can't avail yourself of Charles' generous offer, it looks like Bay Bikes rents road bikes:

I bring my bike when I'm in the area. Rentals are outrageous.

17 mile is a great ride. The trail goes far north, too, along 1. I also like riding south on 1 into Big Sur, although the traffic can be intimidating. If you go up in to Carmel Valley, turn left and climb Laurelas Grade Road. It's a challenging climb that the AToC used. It took me 45-60 minutes to climb it; the pros did it in 7-10.

Ya, bay bikes for a rental.

What day are you here? There's a good sat am ride 7/730/8 depending on speed that takes a nice loop through Pebble. Starts at portola plaza hotel. There's usually a Sunday 8 am ride also. Linger and a little slower. Starts at 8 at portola plaza hotel.

Feel free to PM me for any specific questions.

Check out the sea otter classic gran fondo routes for two good options. There is a coastal route and a Carmel valley route. The latter includes laureles grade climb which tiretrax mentioned. It's one of the steepest continuous grade climbs I've ever done. Definitely challenging.
