Deciding between rim options for my training/everyday wheels...

I just found out that DT440's are being discontinued which is unfortunate but things change. The HED Belgium's seem like a great rim but cost more $$. I am either going White Industries hubs/Record/DT's...

Any pros or cons you guys would like to suggest or point out?

Everyday? R460. Best value in a wide rim today.

I've got Belgiums on two bikes and have been very happy with them...

I have DT RR440 (Asymmetric) on one of my bikes, and lots of earlier incarnations of that same rim on other bikes. I love DT rims (and hubs etc.)

...but I killed those 440s in less than 2,000 miles of riding. Not sure if that's an indictment of the 440 rims or just the way I ride; I've killed lots of rims JRA over the years.

I'd buy 'em again. Just need to manage expectations when it comes to an "everyday rim"

Did you destroy them by braking or potholes or over tensioning/undertensioning?

Better than the H+Son rims? I haven't heard the best things about the H+Son.

Archetypes are great hoops, but R460's are half the cost, are tubeless compatible and build up great.

Throwing my hat in for the r460. Have Old Potatoe build you a pair with your prefered hub and you'll have some great all around everyday wheels. I did last year and couldn't be happier:beer:

it depends on what kind of wheels these will be.

i love archetypes. excellent hoops.

if you dont mind the lack of aero, and are building with a higher spoke count anyway, i find the TB14 to be another awesome choice for a smooth, comfortable rim.

mated to a nice plump tire, they are very magic carpet ridey. i built up a set a few years ago that have taken some major, major punishment and i've never touched them with a spoke wrench once they were built.

Great picture! These will be used for road only (short rides, long rides, training, climbing, etc). I am going to run with the gumwall tires in 25s. 28h front and rear on the wheels as well. I love the White Industries looks and how easy to service they are. I also want to be under the $800 mark!

there is NO reason why an alloy wheelset, built with even the most Cadillac-ee-est of parts should ever cost more than $800.

I don't have the DT Swiss rims in question, but I DO have the TB-14s. They make great 'old school-esque' rims that are slightly wider than MA40s.

If you're riding steel, they look very nice

They're hanging in the garage at the moment 'cause I've broken out my 'summer wheels.' Soon as fall rolls around again, they go back on the bike. Ditto with some Open Pro wheels I've built...

440...not sure why HED so expensive for a rim made where it is. Yes, my distributor is discounting 440...replaced by what I don't know.

Agree...even with DT350 or Record, about $580 from moi. DT440.

Are the logos removable on the 460s? Can't tell if they are painted, lasered, or stickers from the pictures.

I have 2 sets of hed C2 rims and I just love the way that they ride. One set is built on 28H WI hubs and the other set on DT240s.
They are a bit more but Im willing to spend that as I have nothing but great things to say about them.

Crap pavement, including lots of potholes.

I killed 2 Hed C2 rims on potholes. Expensive to replace!

Have another set of wheels with R460's and could not be happier.

Like the others I am rolling on the 460. The 23mm Conty looks absolutely huge on the 460. I had no problems. There are a few nicks. I am an aggressive rider and weigh over 185#!

Those DT460 laced to DT350 hubs with Sapim Race or similar would be a great bang-for-the-buck wheelset. If you interested in a rim a touch wider and with an offset rear you might look to the new Pacenti Forza.

Same here. I find them to be a pretty stout rim over all. They’re not cheap, but they are worth every penny to me. I have one set built with DT350s and one set to WI T11s.

Better than the H+Son rims? I haven't heard the best things about the H+Son.
I have these on my SS townie and I’ve been happy with them. They built up nicely and I’ve had zero issues with them. I went with these over the Belgium because I didn’t want to pay Belgium prices for my townie/lock-up bike. I would recommend them.

Those DT460 laced to DT350 hubs with Sapim Race or similar would be a great bang-for-the-buck wheelset.

FWIW, I’ve also heard great things about the DT R460. They’re a really nice looking hoop and built up to some DT 350s would definitely afford you a really nice wheelset without breaking the bank.

I run the WI T11/ HED Belgium as my nice day training wheels.

Big fan!
