i'm always a little bit suspicious when i see quadcopters at racers. sure the footage is great - but this is exactly what i'm afraid of!

Don't understand why the guy endo-ed..drone wreckage seemed to be behind him..? ahh, read the text, junk in front wheel..yeah if you watch the end of the video in the super slow mo, you can see the whole drone up in his fork. I was confused too, until someone in comments mentioned it.

crazy crash! apparently it's against FAA regulations to fly over unprotected people. which, a crit definitely is. you see that pretty regularly in drone footage of races though. gotta say, drones are excellent for cross race footage...

anyway, sounds like rider's OK, but bike banged up. hopefully he gets everything covered by the drone operator and heals up fast.

I am pretty sure that particular quadcopter is controlled from a phone. Depending on where the spammers from cyclingtoday poached the video, you probably can see the idiot flying the thing at :26. Problem with phone control is that chopping the throttle when things go sour isn't trivial like it is with an rc radio. You can see in the slow motion video that the motors were still turning, and it must have flown into the guy's spokes. When he goes over, you can see that most of the quadcopter is still there, which is amazing considering how much detritus has already been spread all over the road.

Unfortunately it sure seems like the majority of flights I see are in flagrant violation of the rules/guidelines.

It is not rocket science, the FAA put out a pretty good public service campaign and spells out the regulations pretty clearly, a lot of it is common sense.

There seems to be a huge draw to fly your drone near crowds, lots of the "pilots" are seeking attention for having/flying a drone. But pretty much anytime there is anyone around to pay attention to you, you should not be flying.

I hate drones at races. Absolutely hate them. Unfortunately, I am in the minority. Racers love them.

5-10% of it fell off but the majority of the mothership is still intact, not sure if you can see from this snapshot but it seems like one of the "wings" is caught up in between one of the spokes and created the lever effect on the downtube.

If the only way to fight gentrification is to own a piece of it, then maybe the only way to fight drones is with a drone of your own that carries anti-drone weaponry.

A tuft of Christmas tinsel would foul a prop pretty effectively, I think? A clever person could devise a method of deploying it, and -- problem solved.

A 12 gauge would be much less hassle.

That tends to gain a lot of unwanted attention.

Those "arms" on high quality drones are often high grade aluminum or carbon fiber tubes.. definitely going to be a big mess if they get in your spokes.

Keep your spokes sharp boys.

Now this here is mah kind a gurl.

“I loaded my [20-gauge] shotgun and took the safety off, and this thing came flying over my trees. I don’t know if they lost command or if they didn’t have good command, but the wind had picked up. It came over my airspace, 25 or 30 feet above my trees, and hovered for a second. I blasted it to smithereens.”

LOL! I reviewed that one when I was putting my seminar together. There is another of an old guy shooting one over his property and bought a whole world of trouble. Turns out, under FAA regs, drones are aircraft and it is illegal to shoot at aircraft.

Ask a field if they'd like the race to be on Youtube, and every hand will go up.

I hate to say it, but looks like THE CYCLIST put an end to that drone...

Hope the remaining peloton thanked him after the race.

A TV drone fell and nearly hit a skier last year: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TJu4kmcy8gQ.

A TV quadcopter in the U.S. is probably legal. This guy at the race was almost surely violating FAA regulations. They have levied big fines ($50K) on people that they insist were flying commercially without the proper paperwork, even though the person thought they were doing it as a hobby. So if this guy has a utube channel with advertising, he might be looking at some problems. I think his odds are good at getting fined for not being registered and flying over non-participants too. Will be interesting.
