View Full Version : Tire pressures for 700x33 jack browns, what tires around this size are people into?

I have a bike with jack Browns that I don't ride very often, I have been airing them up to 75ish pounds but today I was wondering how low I could go while riding around on them. What do you guys run these at?

Also, my next bike is going to be built for this tire size-ish. My lightweight tire experience around this size is limited to compass 700x32s and continue gp4000iis 700x28 but seem to be closer to 29/30.

Curious about the compass 700x35 but I am curious about other options.

On 700x38 paselas im usually around 55r 45f. I'm about 175lbs with clothes and snacks. I've gone lower but that's the sweet spot for me where the tire feels smooth but doesn't fold like crazy in corners. I think pressure difference between front and rear should be more than what most people tend to ride but what do I know.

As far as tires of this type I've never had a good reason to stray from paselas and t-servs. I've used 28s, 32s, 35s, and 38s and all seem pretty true to size but I've never bothered to measure. Have used a lot of tires in 28 and some were faster feeling or cornered a little more solidly but with other trade offs. The challenge stradas in 30 feel nice but cut easily.

For me the t-Serv is actually better if going off pavement much because I've killed a couple paselas from sidewall abrasion. But the t-Serv only comes in black not tan wall. Never been tempted by compass for this reason (also price).

I found those tires (and the Gravelking 32c slicks that I now prefer) to run best for me at about 45-50 pounds of pressure. Of course, I weigh 140 pounds, so that might change your calculus a bit. Take a look at this geekery: https://janheine.wordpress.com/2016/03/09/tire-pressure-take-home/

"The biggest surprise of all our testing (above) was this: For supple tires, pressure makes little difference in performance. We tested three Vittoria tires (Rubino, CX clincher, CX tubular; all 25 mm wide) and found that the supple CX models roll as fast at 70 psi as they do at 130 psi. (For the rest of the world, that is 5 bar and 9 bar.)

The reason is simple: Higher pressure decreases the energy required to flex the tire. Less energy is lost due to internal deformation (hysteresis). But higher pressure increases the losses due to the vibrations of bike and rider. More energy goes to suspension losses. The two effects cancel each other. Whether you pump up your supple tires super-hard or ride them squishy-soft, they have the same resistance.

On the other hand, truly stiff tires feel sluggish at 15% tire drop. The stiff tire is much harder to flex, so it’s useful to minimize that flex by increasing the pressure. For stiff tires, the suspension losses do not vary as much with pressure – they’re always high – since the stiff casing transmits a lot of vibration at any pressure.".

I am 200+ at least half the year and run my compass Barlow pass tires at about 45/50 for most of my rides. I can drop the pressure a bit (5 to 10 psi) if it's all dirt, sand and gravel. Mine are not the extra light casing. I haven't had a flat yet and they might be my favorite tire.

On the Bon Jon's (35's) i was running 55 f/r.

Just put on GravelKings (32's) and bumped it up to 60 f/r for the first ride.

I'm about 200 pounds...

I used to ride Roll-y Pollys and Jack Browns before there were so many tire chioices in these sizes, and 75psi is where I would ride the Roll-y Pollys, not the Jack Browns. Like others above, I preferred the Jack Browns at 45-50psi. If I had them today, I might even try going a little lower. My median weight is 175lbs, so ymmv depending on your weight.

When I owned Jack Brown 'green' tires, I ran 'em at 50 F/60 R. If I went lower than that they felt a little squishy out of the saddle. I weigh 155.

I'm running Panaracer gravelkings at 85 psi on my Black Mtn Road. I weigh around 200#. I did have Soma whatever 33s on there, Extra Light. Those tires were too fragile for NYC --- too much crud (glass, metal, etc).

Lots of variables feed into the "how low can you go" question. I'm 180 lbs and use fairly wide rims and usually ride on pavement. I don't go lower than 60psi on Compass 700c x 32mm. I'm sensitive to balance and tire squish, and if I go any lower than that I definitely get the riding-on-Play-Doh feeling, especially when perpendicular to a stiff wind or at low speeds.

I'm still trying to wear out a 4 year old set of Grand Bois Cypres. Originally sold as 30s, but readily accepted as 32s, they now measure 35. I weigh between 230-240# and run them at 60f/65r, much lower and they get squirrelly. Probably about 3000mi on the front and 2000 on the rear at this point and have a set of Stampede Passes in waiting (they've been waiting for about a year and a half).

I like hardish tires. I am running the 32mm tires at 65psi.

I'm 145 and am running 45ish in 32mm Gravelkings for all around riding. May adjust a little either way for all road or all gravel/dirt.

Run 40/50 on the specialized roubaix 700x32 tires- not sure I would like it much lower for hard cornering.

I ride a lot on a pair of 700x32 Bontrager AW2s that came on a bike I bought--I keep them around ~50-55psi and I'm 160 lbs. Around the same depending on surfaces for my 700x33 Clement LASs.
