Was changing the freehub on my wheel last night from Campy to Shimano (:help:) and realized I had no Phil Tenacious Oil. So I thought, hum NFS is reasonably thick as chain lubes go, probably work okay? and used that. Rode today and freehub was nice and quiet and spun beautifully. Is this going to last or ought I change lube ASAP??

it'll be fine.

i prefer something heavier myself in most hubs, but that'll last reasonably long, no worries.

also, a lot depends on the hub itself, and how well sealed the pawl cavity is from the elements, and what conditions the bike is ridden in.

You're good to go. NFS seems to be at least as heavy, if not more so, than Tenacious. I use synthetic gear oil on freehubs and it works well.

I use chainsaw bar oil but I bet NFS works great too.

I put NFS on my King hubs and they got loud. I put them on my Novatec and they became silent. Seems fine so far

A little off topic but what do you put in your King hubs to make them quieter? I know they're coooooool and all but mine scare me, keep thinking something's wrong with my bike.

Thick oil to quiet hubs may be bad.
If they hang up at the wrong time, your junk may land on the TT.
Thats worse than noise IMHO.

Use motor oil. A lot cheaper than NFS and works as well in a freewheel.

Important question. What hub?

Mobil 1 or some other full synthetic. One bottle lasts forever and doesn't get thick when cold.

I prefer thinner lubricants for my pawls. I use motor oil.

OK, I'll admit it...I use the green "Phil-ish" grease. I've never had a problem and I've been doing it since we used to use one of Jim Stein's (http://www.jastein.com/) grease injectors on our freewheels.

Am I gonna die?

Affirmative, but not from a greasy freewheel. ;)

I use Phil grease too. But I thin it a little with some 3:1 homebrew lube. Works really well.

NFS should be fine. Hubs like Mavic need slightly lower viscosity oil.

FWIW, i did this in the dt240s yesterday and holy hell, it's as quiet as it's ever been.

FWIW, i did this in the dt240s yesterday and holy hell, it's as quiet as it's ever been.

I have been tempted to try this of late. I find that no matter how much DT grease I put in there to quieten things down, the quiet only lasts about thirty miles before the decibel level is elevated again. I have tried the 54T ratchets but they only lasted a few rides because they were so damn loud.

How much NFS did you put in there - drops or did you bathe the ratchets?

I am in two minds though as the sound of the ratcheting acts as a good alert system when I am riding along the MUTs that we have here.
