My Fierte is due to be shipped Sept. 5th. I stopped by the dealer today and talked about components. I know nothing about wheels. What are your thoughts on the R540's? Thanks

Ultegra/open pros are lighter/better/cheaper

These are the wheels I first had on my Legend. They're a little heavier than fancier/more expensive models but they perform very well and the price is right. I've since moved on to a custom set from Mike Garcia but those Ultegra/OP's are still going strong on my commuter bike. They're well over 5000 miles and I've had not a single problem with them (I'll add that I"m a massive 5'6" 146 pounds because I think rider weight does influence longevity of wheels).

I had a set of 535's on my old bianchi and they stayed nice and true. Not the lightest thing and they had a bit of lateral movement, especially the front when climbing. Then again I'm over 200 lbs.

Sold them & the bike to a neighbor. He's maybe 220 and crushes every pot hole in sight. The wheels are 4 years old now and still going strong.

But, like Ken said a set 'o open pros will do you right. Plus if you ever need to true them or replace a spoke they are a lot more user friendly.

Any idea how much the 540's and the Ultegra o/p should go for?

Pre builts are nice so do yourself a favor and get a pair of classic built wheels and then "tune" the bike with something later.

OP/Ultegras are about $200 at Performance- I paid $300 for a handbuilt set through my LBS. Wheelsmith builds dandies available by order through LBS.
