Fascinating as he really does seem to be "Just riding along" albeit
with speed. What do people think, is it one of the exploding Zipp
wheels?

No way to know from that picture. Any number of things could have happened. Could have overlapped with the rider in front of him and had his spokes torn up by hitting the riders frame, could have been JRA, could have.....

smooth surface there, but they look as though they just came through the $hit, and I bet something got mangled there that eventually blew up. Spokes look to be spontaneously exploding in that awesome pic.

But that photo is crazy, no? Not just a taco'd wheel, but all the spokes have decided to flee the hub en mass.

It is amazing to me to notice that he's already clipped out of his pedals. I don't think I'd know what was going in until I was in a scraped up mess on the tarmac.

This is what happens when you ignore science and stick with rim brakes. Notice all the other upright riders?

I keed. I keed.

He still managed to finish 2nd in that race too. Something about his spokes getting into contact with someone's TA. That's all I know. Still can't figure it out haha

Recalled the front hubs for a reason...

I'm guessing it was not literally an "intact one second, exploded the next" sort of situation. He likely could feel something was wrong with the front wheel. Incredible that he finished 2nd.

The hub is still secure in the dropout.

Anybody know what kind of race this was? All the bikes appear to have disc brakes and maybe wider tires, so perhaps this a gravel/cx race? If that's an equipment car, then maybe not.

My question: are these kinds of incidents more common with disc brakes?

Big Edit: I take it all back. One bike appears to have rim brakes--the exploding wheeled one! Also, the tires look like road tires.

If he was pro he'd just ride it out on the hub.

Naw, it's simple. Someone's disc cut his spokes.

I bet that wouldn't have happened if he'd been riding these instead:

Yep and it looks like his brake caliper ended up in the wheel which could explain the instantaneous "shearing" of the spokes. Or somebody shoved a frame pump in there...
