Am looking for an inexpensive rear CL disc 12/142 TA hub for a gravel bike. Any reason I shouldn't just buy one of the cheap Shimano, like the SLX? I love Shimano road- even their cheaper stuff is still very good.

Other than weight, no, there's not a big reason to avoid the lower end Shimano hubs. The SLX is fine, but if you plan to use 11s road cassettes look to the RS505.

Edit: I'm not sure Shimano hubs can be converted so that hub is probably QR only.

Will be for 10sp. They do seem to have both QR and TA

That is a great choice of hub. Just say inexpensive instead of cheap and it's all good.

No, no reason. Shimano SLX and even XT great hubs, great value for the $.

That's the SLX (10s). I don't see that the RS505 comes in 12x142. All these are fine choices if you are sure you will never want a different configuration of axle or freehub. If that's not the case then a convertible hub (like DT 350) makes a lot of sense.

DT Swiss 350 centerlock hubs are a bit more expensive $40-60 (if you buy from Europe), but can be converted to different standards. Many would argue that they slightly higher quality and more easily serviceable. Plus resale value is higher

Buy a DT 350 or Hope RS4 hub - future proof it against different axle standards or 11-speed cassettes.

I think if your total amount is above 350, the shipping is only 11 or so to the US (no matter how bulky).

At starbike, DT 350 rear is $116. As I mentioned, if you place an order with a total of $350 or so, shipping is only $11.
