Got this one out today...it's been stored in the back of the garage since last spring covered with junk. I get it out every spring to just ride around the neighborhood.

1951 condor m05 Swiss army bike. I bought it from a military surplus store about ten years ago, with intentions of displaying it at my work for decoration.

Apparently, my decorating style incorporating this bike doesn't jive with everyone else's, so I kept it home.

At 55lbs it is relegated to neighborhood status only. Three braking type apparatus systems are utilized to completely stop this beauty. Coaster, rear drum, and the nearly useless front tire brake. Patina? Yep, got it in spades. They paint these primer red, then black, so there is a lovely "is that rust or primer?" Patina all over it.

It brings you back to what a lovely contraption the bicycle is, though. Smooth, comfy, it is like a bicycle tank rolling down the street, like a fright train downhill, and like a mule going up. I could just ride this one as a training bike and be a better rider. Major respect to any Swiss gents who served militaervelo duty. I can barely jump this one over a six percent grade and that is without weapons and gear.

My Wife hates me right now, because I'm leaving it in the entryway. I'll get away with it for a week or so and then it will get pushed back into the garage.

We are so used to seeing each other's fastest greatest lightest...what's your just for fun runabout?

Never fail to get a lot of hellos and how do you dos. We also rarely get annoyed drivers because they think it's fun. Kids go gaga when they see it.

The negative is that if you leave it parked, people will sit on it, stand on it, move it for photos...it's an attractive nuisance.

Ha ha

I bought a tandem and rode it in a Century with my brother. We both agreed that would not happen again, can't imagine having 3 riders.

I've heard of tandems referred to as "a divorce" maybe this one is "2 ex's"

Cool bike

For exclusive use in a neighborhood, the bike in front not the one behind it.

There is not another Brompton like it anywhere - my own solution for my own needs, namely an attempt to make the position and pedal stroke on this folding bike as close as possible to, and supportive of, my own sporting roadbike position and pedal stroke.

Schwing! There's a local guy who ran his childhood Schwinn stingray in a charity ride for 50 miles to raise money. I wouldn't do that, but still cool.

Please tell me you have a set of bunny ears on there somewhere;-)

As an Italo-phile and a Bianchi aficionado, that is a very unique and cool bike. Which makes it almost to dear to use as a neighborhood bike unless it is never subject to any abuse and never locked up in pilferage's way. I'd be upset if I scratched the lovely celeste paint.

You never know, sometimes bikes seen in the neighborhood fly under the radar and simply go untouched. Being prudent with it is all you can do. HaHa, that basket is a scary thought for a bridge n' tunnel BMW-guy sitting in Canal Street gridlock seeing you come up behind his new paint in his rear view mirror.

Like weisan, I've joined team mini-velo for my neighborhood bike. I've demoted my 3speed Tricross for rainy days since it has fenders.

I do wish it had a little more top end. I'm undecided if I should go with a Capreo or Rohloff build.

This is my Townie. It had never gone further than 50k until 2013. That was the year the National Parks closed down on the very weekend of the Furnace Creek 508. We were pretty much notified 2 days out that we might not be able to pass through Death Valley National Park. I was registered for the vintage/classic division and was going to ride my Mercian. It was supposed to be my 5th 508 and get me into the Hall of Fame. When I found out about the truncated course, I felt like I needed a contingency due to shortchanging my HOF ride by 150 miles (The route was shortened to 353 miles with an out and back to Trona). So I pulled the Tubus rack and Berthoud loaf bag off the rear, threw on some toe clips and straps, and it was pretty much ready to go.

Somewhere around mile 150 I managed to crash and dislocate and break my middle finger (that's my money maker!). Rode the final 200 miles without a right glove which totally sucked ass when it dipped into the low 30s on the second morning. Surprisingly braking, descending and climbing weren't too bad on the townie bars. I was able to avoid using the middle finger while braking and could palm the grips while climbing out of the saddle. If I'd had drop bars, I think I might have been in more trouble.

Frame is a 1984 Medici that I had stripped and powdercoated by Maas Bros. Cranks are steel 3 pin Campy Gran Sports with a single 50T steel ring. Rear derailleur is a Nuovo Record with a Rally cage. Single Simplex Retrofriction shifter. Suntour 13-30 6 speed New Ultra Winner freewheel. Steel Campy road quill pedals with track style steel toe clips Suntour fluted alloy stem. Brooks B72 springer saddle. Steel Taiwanese 27.0 seatpin and townie bars. I originally had some Athena calipers, Gran Sport hubs and 27" MA40 rims but swapped them out for the 700c Open Pro/Super Record wheels on the Mercian and some modern Shimano long reach dual pivots to make up for the smaller wheel size. I didn't really trust that old wheelset. And if it failed, it was doubtful that anyone would have a spare 27" wheelset to loan me. I also didn't have any 27" tires that weren't absolute $hite.

I'm pretty sure that it was HEAVILY used for its intended purpose. I think it's likely very well designed for that purpose as well...

I know NOTHING about bike polo, but I was talking to a guy who showed me photos of current "pro" polo gear, and it's amazing how similar the design is to this frame.

My Bilenky and my wife's '83 Stumpjumper.

We go to the St. Paul Farmer's Market, our community garden plot, coffee shops, kids' soccer games etc.

Love these bikes. So versatile.

In fact, I took the Bilenky on a 650 mile trip around Lake Superior a few summers ago.

The bike held up better than I did.
