View Full Version : Help me pick some rims

I'm building "new" wheels for my 1987 Guerciotti. It's SLX, equipped with first generation C-Record. I never had the original hubs or wheels.

I recently acquired some 32h hubs courtesy of our very own gomango, and am trying to decide on a direction. These will be clinchers, as I am totally clueless on tubulars. Obviously the current trend is for wider rims, up to 23mm for road use, and I am intrigued by classic stylings of the H plus son TB14. But that might be more rim than I need, since I've always run 23mm tires on this. 25s fit, but only if installed deflated in the rear.

Anyhow, spiritually, this bike may demand something more period correct. Should I get some NOS or gently used campagnolo or ambrosio? Other suggestions?

TB14s in hard ano with 23mm tires would be my call. Something old, something new.

I think the DT 440 rims would be a better choice. They have a classic look with modern alloy and moderate width. I have these on my Zanconato cross bike.

Too logo'ed up for me. Do they come off?

I'm also pretty set on box section.

I'd hunt down some NOS mavic gp40's or ma40's.

Great riding rims that are built like tanks. Periods correct too!

I have some MA2s in the bin. Lace those up, or too pedestrian?

NOS Ambrosio Excellence rims would do the job quite nicely!

The 440 is a box rim (like Open Pro). They are21mm wide so fit in with older bikes with less clearance. The quality is also significantly better than the other rims mentioned and don't weigh a ton.

TB14 or wait for the New Mavic Open pro which might be cool looking on this frame

Archetype in silver. Makes that 23mm tire 25-26mm wide plus a very durable rim. Classy look also.

TB-14 or try to find some NOS Campag clincher(if ya gotta, Nancy) like Omegas
Or such. Sun CR-18 aren't bad either.

Nice rim, far better than open pro, imho.

Absolutely. Or the new OpenPros with some polished hubs.
