As someone who grew up with The Tonight Show and Carson, Rickles was always there. And you felt like you got to know him.

His was a special kind of comedy that was insulting yet not mean. He was one of a kind and will be missed.

This is my favorite Rickles-Carson moment of all. I remember watching it live.

Definitely one of a kind. I can only imagine how often Mr. Jeff Ross must have studied Don in order to hone his own routine.

Rickles has been the best of the best when it comes to that specific kind of comedy.

Rest in peace, good sir.

He was one of my favorites from that era along with Phyllis Diller and Joan Rivers.

In their day, they were the best without the need for f bombs or "dirty" material. And while I do enjoy modern comedians and all that they bring, that was a special time as comedy came of age.

Loss of a legend.

He was one of a kind. Insulted everyone, but everyone knew he was joking!

Thank God Rickles lived when he did. Can you imagine if Don was starting out today? He’d be branded “hater & racist” faster than you could say “hockey puck”.

RIP ya funny bastid!

I was too young to remember any of this, but evidently back in the 1960's, Don Rickles' mother lived in the same Miami Beach apartment/condo building that my grandmother lived in. According to her (via my Dad), he was overwhelmingly attentive and generous to his mother and many of her friends who lived in the condo building. I think this was a point of some friction between my Dad and his mother, who may have used it in a "why aren't you that good to me, Arthur" kind of thing. Well maybe not being a world famous wealthy star of stage and screen might have had something to do with it. But my Dad met him a couple of times when both in Florida visiting their mothers - my Dad was down there on business a lot) - and said he was an incredibly sweet, nice guy. Nothing like his stage persona, although there was always a sweetness that showed through the nasty facade.

My Dad's been gone more than 10 years now - that generation is pretty much all gone now. Man, did they live in a different world than we're in now. Rickles was a real foundation of that society, or at least it's entertainment. Really really funny guy. And a huge presence...

RIP,

-Ray

I remember seeing him on TV in the 60's and 70's -the Friar's Club Roasts and Dean Martin Roasts. Rickles had such an amazing talent to insult people but in such a good natured way that the recipient never seemed to get mad. I think you could sense that underneath his act he was a very nice guy. I loved watching his his schtick, he was pointed, funny and amazingly quick-witted.
His comedy might not have been appreciated nowadays but I like to think he would have been successful even now.

RIP sir

I'll just leave this here:

"President Obama is a personal friend of mine. He was over to the house yesterday, but the mop broke."
