View Full Version : OT: What songs make you feel good...

I know there are a lot of songs that just make you feel good, or get your feet tapping, and put a smile on your face. I heard this one on a Sunday radio program here called "Silly Songs". They play cartoon, movie, sitcom theme songs plus anything else that's that's funny. Old and new from 5 - 8 pm. This one is fun and still stuck in my head...

Hawaiian Roller Coaster Ride:

Aloha e aloha e
'Ano 'ai ke aloha e
Aloha ae aloha e
A nu ay ki aloha e

There’s no place I’d rather be
Then on my surfboard out at sea
Lingering in the ocean blue
And If I had one wish come true
I’d surf till the sun sets
Beyond the horizon

A wiki wiki mai lohi lohi
Lawe mai i ko papa he'e nalu
Flyin by on the Hawaiian roller coaster ride

A wiki wiki mai lohi lohi
La we mai iko papa he na lu
Pi'i na nalu la lahalaha
O ka moana hanupanupa
Lalala i kala hanahana
Me ke kai hoene i ka pu'e one
Helehele mai kakou e
Hawaiian roller coaster ride

There’s no place I’d rather be
Than on the seashore dry, wet free
On golden sand is where I lay
And if I only had my way
I'd play til the sun sets
Beyond the horizon

Lalala i kala hanahana
Me ke kai hoene i ka pu'e one
It’s time to try the Hawaiian Roller coaster ride

Hang loose, hang ten, howzit, shake a shaka
No worry, no fear, ain't no biggie braddah
Cuttin' in, cuttin' up, cuttin' back, cuttin' out
Frontside, backside, goofy footed, wipe out

Looking for the wipeout
Let's get jumpin', surf's up and pumpin'
Coastin' with the motion of the ocean
Whirlpools swirling, cascading, twirling
Hawaiian roller coaster ride

There’s no place I’d rather be
Then on my surfboard out at sea
Lingering in the ocean blue
And if I had one wish come true
I’d surf till the sun sets
Beyond the horizon

Ergott,
I see your Mahler 8 and raise you a Mahler 2.

BTW I heard the Adelaide Symphony do Mahler 5 last week. Nothing beats a big symphony orchestra LIVE. It was great- especially the Adagietto...We have a Finnish conductor here at the moment and whilst his Sibelius is good- as you would expect- the Mahler was superb.

One Hit Wonders Lyrics

The Weather Girls

It's Raining Men Lyrics

Hi - Hi! We're your Weather Girls - Ah-huh -
And have we got news for you - You better listen!
Get ready, all you lonely girls
and leave those umbrellas at home. - Alright! -

Humidity is rising - Barometer's getting low
According to all sources, the street's the place to go
Cause tonight for the first time
Just about half-past ten
For the first time in history
It's gonna start raining men.

It's Raining Men! Hallelujah! - It's Raining Men! Amen!
I'm gonna go out to run and let myself get
Absolutely soaking wet!
It's Raining Men! Hallelujah!
It's Raining Men! Every Specimen!
Tall, blonde, dark and lean
Rough and tough and strong and mean

God bless Mother Nature, she's a single woman too
She took off to heaven and she did what she had to do
She taught every angel to rearrange the sky
So that each and every woman could find her perfect guy
It's Raining Men! Hallelujah! - It's Raining Men! Amen!
It's Raining Men! Hallelujah!
It's Raining Men! Ame---------nnnn!

I feel stormy weather / Moving in about to begin
Hear the thunder / Don't you lose your head
Rip off the roof and stay in bed

God bless Mother Nature, she's a single woman too
She took off to heaven and she did what she had to do
She taught every angel to rearrange the sky
So that each and every woman could find her perfect guy
It's Raining Men! Yeah!

Humidity is rising - Barometer's getting low
According to all sources, the street's the place to go
Cause tonight for the first time
Just about half-past ten
For the first time in history
It's gonna start raining men.

It's Raining Men! Hallelujah! - It's Raining Men! Amen!
It's Raining Men! Hallelujah! - It's Raining Men!

You’re gonna make me lonesome when you go.

Idiot wind.

and

Just sit right back and you'll hear a tale,
a tale of a fateful trip.
That started from this tropic port,
aboard this tiny ship.
The mate was a mighty sailin' man,
the skipper brave and sure.
Five passengers set sail that day,
for a three hour tour, a three hour tour………
The weather started getting rough,
the tiny ship was tossed.
If not for the courage of the fearless crew,
the Minnow would be lost; the Minnow would be lost.
The ship took ground on the shore of this uncharted desert isle,
with Gilligan, the Skipper too,
the Millionaire, and his Wife,
the Movie Star, the Professor and Mary Ann,
here on Gilligan's Isle.

Wow, there's an artist I'd almost forgotten about. Great horn.

Was it Salonen?

I heard 5 in Avery Fisher with Chicago Sym. That was unbelievable. I also heard them do Rite of Spring in Carnagie. The two best concerts ever.

My mom sang Mahler 2 with the LI Phil. That was a cool concert. I have 2 with NYP and the organ at then end will make you lose your bowels in my car!

Can't you hear that rooster crowin'?
Rabbit runnin' down across the road
Underneath the bridge where the water flowed through
So happy just to see you smile
Underneath the sky of blue
On this new morning, new morning
On this new morning with you.

Can't you hear that motor turnin'?
Automobile comin' into style
Comin' down the road for a country mile or two
So happy just to see you smile
Underneath the sky of blue
On this new morning, new morning
On this new morning with you.

The night passed away so quickly
It always does when you're with me.

Can't you feel that sun a-shinin'?
Ground hog runnin' by the country stream
This must be the day that all of my dreams come true
So happy just to be alive
Underneath the sky of blue
On this new morning, new morning
On this new morning with you.

So happy just to be alive
Underneath the sky of blue
On this new morning, new morning
On this new morning with you.
New morning . . .

THE SPIDER AND THE FLY
(Nanker/ Phelge/M. Jagger/K. Richards)

Sittin' thinkin' sinkin' drinkin'
Wondering what I'd do when I'm through tonight
Smoking moping, maybe just hopin'
Some little girl will pass on by
Don't wanna be alone but I love my girl at home
I remember what she said
She said, "My, my, my don't tell lies, keep fidelity in your head
My my my, don't tell lies. When you're done you should go to bed
Don't say hi, like a spider to a fly
Jump right ahead and you're dead"

Sit up, fed up, low down go round
Down to the bar at the place I'm at
Sitting drinking, supereficially thinking
About the rinsed-out blonde on my left
Then I said, "hi" like a spider to a fly
Remebering what my little girl said

She was common, flirty, she looked about thirty
I would have run away but I was on my own
She told me later she's a machine operator
She said she liked the way I held the microphone
I said my, my, like the spider to the fly
Jump right ahead in my web

Pump it Up

Ive been on tenterhooks
Ending in dirty looks,
Listning to the muzak,
Thinking bout this n that.
She said thats that.
I dont wanna chitter-chat.
Turn it down a little bit
Or turn it down flat.

Pump it up when you dont really need it.
Pump it up until you can feel it.

Down in the pleasure centre,
Hell bent or heaven sent,
Listen to the propaganda,
Listen to the latest slander.
Theres nothing underhand
That she wouldnt understand.

Pump it up until you can feel it.
Pump it up when you dont really need it.

Shes been a bad girl.
Shes like a chemical.
Though you try to stop it,
Shes like a narcotic.
You wanna torture her.
You wanna talk to her.
All the things you bought for her,
Putting up your temprature.

Pump it up until you can feel it.
Pump it up when you dont really need it.

Out in the fashion show,
Down in the bargain bin,
You put your passion out
Under the pressure pin.
Fall into submission,
Hit-and-run transmission.
No use wishing now for any other sin.

Pump it up until you can feel it.
Pump it up when you dont really need it.

Ergott,

I was wrong- our current conductor- Arvo Volmer- is Estonian not Finnish. His Sibelius is still very good though. Salonen would be too pricey for a little city like ours!- he's something of a star, no?

I can't sing at all- but if I could - singing in Mahler 2 would be out of this world. I went to Melbourne about 12 years to hear the Melbourne Symphony do Mahler 2 conducted by Gilbert Kaplan, an american conductor- do you know his story?- its a good one! Business journalist who did very nicely, money-wise, became intrigued, nay obsessed, with Mahler 2, taught himself to conduct, taught himself musicology, did some groundbreaking research into the writing of Mahler 2 then travelled the world conducting that one piece. Something of a hero of mine.

When I walk down the street
Seems everyone I meet
Gives me a friendly hello
I guess I'm just a lucky so and so

The birds in every tree
All sing so merrily
They sing wherever I go
I guess I'm just a lucky so and so

Well if you should ask me the amount in my bank account
I must confess that I'm slipping
But that don't bother me, cause confidentially
I've got a dream that's pippin

And when my day is through
Each night I hurry to
A love that's faithful I know
I guess I'm just a lucky so an so

Whenever I hear this tune I instantly remember being ~10 years old & riding in the back seat of my Aunt Marge's car with my cousins going somewhere on Long Island while eating donuts. Some 25 years later I was playing bass in a GB band that had this tune in their book, and so in addition to the recurring sense of nostalgia it brings I now also have a newfound appreciation for Carol Kaye's deceptively simple yet clever bassline. It's like a double layercake of Feel Good!

This Old House, Jump Jive An' Wail, Pennsylvania 6-5000, Gettin' In The Mood, Mack The knife- Brian Setzer

There are others but more often than not when I'm working in the garage or want to be brought to a better frame of mind I tend to fall back on these most of the time. Thanks for starting the thread!

It's all Over Now was one of my favorite Rolling Stones songs. Ry Cooder played it great. But rolling stones played it best...

Like someone said a few years ago in the original incarnation of this thread
Bob Dylan - Highway 61 Revisited -- "God said whoa, Abe said what...."

'Good Morning Sunshine" from Hair
'Superstition' by Stevie Wonder

There's tons more. Nothing like a great song to put everything back in perspective.

Runaway by Del Shannon and Tom Petty's Running Down a Dream always put me in a great go mode! Or Pantera's 'This Love'.

He chose his own style. He wrote his own songs, and his voice beats Ry every time, but hey, I'm a Cooder fan as well.

It's a beautiful mornin' ahhh
I think I'll go outside a while
An jus' smile
Just take in some clean fresh air boy
Ain't no sense in stayin' inside
If the weather's fine an' you got the time
It's your chance to wake up and plan another brand new day
Either way
It's a beautiful mornin' ahhh

Each bird keeps singin' his own song
So long
I've got to be on my way now
Ain't no fun just hangin' around
I've got to cover ground you couldn't keep me down
It just ain't no good if the sun shines
When you're still inside
Shouldn't hide still inside shouldn't hide
Ahhhh oh shouldn't hide ah ah oh

cheers

"Box of Rain" Grateful Dead
Words by Robert Hunter; music by Phil Lesh
Copyright Ice Nine Publishing; used by permission.

Look out of any window
any morning, any evening, any day
Maybe the sun is shining
birds are winging or
rain is falling from a heavy sky -
What do you want me to do,
to do for you to see you through?
this is all a dream we dreamed
one afternoon long ago

Walk out of any doorway
feel your way, feel your way
like the day before
Maybe you'll find direction
around some corner
where it's been waiting to meet you -
What do you want me to do,
to watch for you while you're sleeping?
Well please don't be surprised
when you find me dreaming too

Look into any eyes
you find by you, you can see
clear through to another day
I know it's been seen before
through other eyes on other days
while going home --
What do you want me to do,
to do for you to see you through?
It's all a dream we dreamed
one afternoon long ago

Walk into splintered sunlight
Inch your way through dead dreams
to another land
Maybe you're tired and broken
Your tongue is twisted
with words half spoken
and thoughts unclear
What do you want me to do
to do for you to see you through
A a box of rain will ease the pain
and love will see you through

Just a box of rain -
wind and water -
Believe it if you need it,
if you don't just pass it on
Sun and shower -
Wind and rain -
in and out the window
like a moth before a flame

It's just a box of rain
I don't know who put it there
Believe it if you need it
or leave it if you dare
But it's just a box of rain
or a ribbon for your hair
Such a long long time to be gone
and a short time to be there

Shake Ya A$$

keno

now that's funny

Hey ya! - Oukast (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PWgvGjAhvIw) <--- It's impossible to dislike this song and not want to move your feet when it comes on.

Bombs over Bagdad - Outkast (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fVyVIsvQoaE) <----- This song is great to get you hyped up to do whatever you want, i used to listen to this song before i went skateboarding and it always got me hyped, try it out, trust me, even do it before you cook, you'll be extra hyped to make that beef stew..

Girls girls girls - Jay Z (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LUg7G3CPos0) <--- smooooooth

Let's get Blown - Snoop ft Pharell (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6diBt5lx3xM&ob=av3e) more smoooothness

Heard em Say - Kanye ft Adam Levine (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=elVF7oG0pQs&ob=av2e) <--- real lyrics and amazing beat

My love is waiting - Marvin Gaye (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z6UWvx8fsF0) <------ It's Marvin gaye, need i say more?

Rock with you - Michael Jackson (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5X-Mrc2l1d0&ob=av2n) <----- you could never not mention the King of Pop in a topic like this

i could make this list go on and on, pretty much anything from pharell to jay z , to the temptations, marvin gaye, you name it.

hip hop, soul, R&B and motown is where it's at...nothing else compares...

but the ultimate feel good stuff i'd have to say is almost anything from MJ, when you listen to his stuff you can't help but dance and groove out...:)

Oh, jeez, music is such an elixir, this could run on forever.

Madeliene Peyroux - Laughs like you; You're gonna make me lonesome when you go

Dan Hicks - Driftin'

Queen - Somebody to love (just try to stay still and not sing along!)

Coltrane - My favorite things, for starters

Miles Davis - Milestones, for starters, along with Someday my prince will come

Bach - you pick. Air on G string, for starters

Bruch - Violin Concerto 1, second movement is sublime

Ella and Duke live at Montreux - Mack the Knife - again, just try and sit still through this one.

Ella and Louis Armstrong - Cheek to Cheek. always fun. 'Course I danced with my bride at our wedding to this one. :)

Allman Bros - Live - In memory of Elizabeth Reed. Crank this up and park yourself between the speakers. Amazing intensity there.

Opera - I don't go there, but I know others live and breath this stuff.

Allison Kraus - 'Forget about it' CD is full of great melodies.

Mozart - later symphonies, piano sonatas, ...

Bruce Cockburn - pacing the cage

Mark Knopfler, Keb Mo, Lyle Lovett,...

And on and on. I think good music is God's way of saying hello once in a while.
