I like this approach much more than the recent Catalunya approach and other race jury decisions.

The chief commissaire at the Tour of Flanders has promised that the race jury could disqualify any riders who ride on the pavement in Sunday’s race.

Didier Simon said that he and his fellow commissaires will apply a zero tolerance approach in the Tour of Flanders, threatening to expel riders from the race rather than issue them with fines.

Those smooth dirt paths may look like a bit of relief, but you're entering a world of pain.

Over the line!
Huh?
I'm sorry, Smokey. You were over the line, that's a foul.

And let's also not forget, Dude, that keeping wildlife, an amphibious rodent, for uh, domestic, you know, within the city — that isn't legal either.

How many of you have been on a race jury?

Yeah, I thought so.

It's the "in order to gain ("even one meter" in Simon's words) advantage" part that complicates things. Not sure how the exact UCI rule is stated. The story quotes part of it but it is not clear whether it goes on to say it's a violation only if an advantage is gained or if a rider simply rides on pavement. I suppose no matter what it will be a judjement on the part of the commisaires. I think Simon's statement clouds it further, since the main advantage here is in conserved energy rather than meters.

...that picture also illustrates a possible dilemma.

I think every single post prior to this one was a big lebowski reference :)

I only mention it because sometimes there's a man... I won't say a hero, 'cause, what's a hero? But sometimes, there's a man. And I'm talkin' about Sagan here. Sometimes, there's a man, well, he's the man for his time and place. He fits right in there.

I like his style, dude. But, does he have to ride so many wheelies?

Not well.

But I can list a litany of inconsistent application of rules at the pro level that, as a fan, and a believer in the rule of law, annoy the crap out of me.

I prefer the 'put the fear of god in them so they don't break the rules in the first place' approach, instead of being put in a position, say, where half the field rides through a level crossing -- violating the rules and a law, and then the race jury doesn't DQ anyone.

I'd say that riding on dirt paths is a little less serious, but it is still a rule and taking a hard line will hopefully prevent the infractions in the first place.

The Supreme Court has roundly rejected prior constraint.

I guess the course took care of enforcement so the race jury didn't need to.
