I have a CR-V with the spare mounted to the rear gate. I'd like to get a two bike rack (maybe three) that mounts to the spare.

The gate open sideways, so something that only mounts to the spare without extra straps so that I can still open the gate would be ideal.

Got any recommendations?

Pretty sure the Thule, Saris, and Yakama racks for this only hold 2 bikes.

Basically just need to see what fits your car and your price range. All in my experience have been pretty good.

Mounting to the spare sounds a little shaky to me.

The Saris Bones (2 or 3-bike) may be able to 'reach around' the tire- you adjust it yourself.

I've had good luck with mine, including getting spare parts.

Cool Wisconsin folks.

Got a Hitch? If so, I would forget the spare and get a 1up...awesome racks.

It depends on what you're after. I think the best trunk rack that is adaptable to wide range of cars is the Thule Raceway Pro 3, which I got for my Acura TL after deciding not to put a hitch on that particular car for my hitch rack. This rack does what they advertised it will do or won't do, unlike other trunk racks I had years ago putting two or three bikes on the rack they never bang each other, nor does a bike come into contact with the car, and the rack doesn't mar up surfaces on the car. See: https://www.etrailer.com/dept-pg-Trunk_Bike_Racks-pt-3_Bikes.aspx

Speaking of hitch racks I liked the former BoneLocker now called SCS Magnum Rack. This rack is extremely heavy duty and incorporates a high degree of security for locking the bikes. I haven't found anything even close to what this rack offers. See: http://scsrack.com/

If I read correctly, the barn door could not swing open with a One-Up. And one criteria is that the door remain operational.

One-Up is a great rack.

I'd call some manufacturer's and talk to them about solutions.

I am only familiar with the Thule spare tire mount. It bolts behind the wheel using the spare tired lugs (have to pop out the center cap if alloy spare) and the rack can be mounted "centered" even when the spare is off-center. You can also unmount the rack from the bolt on Mount when not using and it's pretty unobtrusive appearance wise.

A hitch would allow you to carry three bikes, anything like the 1Up would need to be tilted down to access the rear door, as would mosy any wheel mount. If you want access to the rear with bikes on the rack there are swing away hitch racks that hold bikes by the frame which may or may not work with the crv rear door, would need to put one on and try it out to see what the clearance and swing arc is like.

I have a "barn door" CRV and ended up installing a hitch and getting an INNO stand up bike rack (similar to 1up). I didn't read great things about the spare tire racks.
