Looking to purchase my first road bike to ride DALMAC this year. Unfortunately i know nothing outside of the mtb realm.

Looking at 3 bikes. An 05 alpe d huez lightly used with all 105 groupset and flight deck computer. Next is a 07 zurich with a mix of ultegra and dura ace. Obviously a nicer rig but its been ridden more and ive heard some folks say be wary of buying used carbon frames. And finally a 14' canndondale synapse 6 full tiagra group. Spec on this bike is lesser than the previous two but is the most contemporary of all the bikes listed and has been ridden far less miles than either also.

I should note that all of these bikes i can purchase for 500usd furthermore adding to my frustration.

Any and all feedback is appreciated as i am a noob to the road biking. Thanks!

The Synapse is a nice bike. Alloy or carbon.
Is it 4700 Tiagra? That stuff is Likely better than the old 105 the other bike has. Probably on par with some worn Ultegra as well.

Those other bikes are 10+ years old.

Its alloy. Thats what i was thinking.... go with the newer bike. Less wear and comparable components due to trickle down tech.

If the 05 Lemond was one of the "spine" bikes (Zurich, Buenos Aires, Tete de Cours), I'd say go that way all day long. Just got back from a really nice ride on my 05 Zurich.

But, the Alpe from that era and the 07 Zurich weren't the best Lemond offered. I'd go Cannondale. They've always done aluminum well. Never bike, newer components.

Thats certainly the way i am leaning! Thanks!

What size? There just might be someone on here to add another option to the mix ;)

I'm a fan of LeMond bikes, but it's hard to argue against the Cannondale in this proposition. '14 Tiagra is fine stuff; at least as good as '05 105. As a possible plus, if the '14 Tiagra is 10-speed (as I think it is), 10-speed wheels are metaphorically dirt-cheap these days, so you could get a very nice upgrade in the wheels down the line for dimes on the dollar.

And, yes, post a want-to-buy in the classifieds here (once you've hit 10(?) posts). Plenty of nice bikes floating around here, potentially near you.

I am thinking about selling my 56 cm Waterford 1100 with Campagnolo Daytona 10 speed (alloy) components. Wonderful bike. Paint has a fair share of issues, also has a dent in the top tube. Let me know if you might have some interest.

Enjoy DALMAC...I would also consider the gearing on each bike to make sure it matches what you will need and prevent any further out of pocket.

If the Lemond Is the one listed on michigan bicycle classified, looks pretty nice if you can score for 500ish. Cannondale is also a good option.

Something i hadnt considered! Thanks for bringing it to my attention... and my price point i am planning on being able do some upgrades before DALMAC.

Yes the zuric is on MI bike classifieds. The alpe is on GR bike swap... both great bikes. Just have some age to them. Im leaning towards the cannondale i think.
