Title says it all... My next bike will be a mid-reach rim brake road bike... Still deciding on lugged steel F/F or titanium with the new Whisky fork. Lets see and talk about the bikes you have with the current gen of dual pivot mid reach brakes.

Rivendell Rambouillet and Romulus both have these brakes. You might be able to find one used. They have similar geometry but the Rambo has slightly more elaborate lugs and more of its tubes are heat-treated than those on the Romulus.

The All-City Mr Pink comes with the Whisky fork. Currently running 25's with fenders. Could easily clear a 30 with fenders. Not sure about without. Probably in the 33-35 range.

Oh man...this is possibly one of my favorite categories of bikes, yet the one that I repeatedly can't justify holding onto. I've had a S&S Co-Motion NorWester and also picked up a Curtlo from here. Both of them have ended up being culled when I went through purges due to functional overlap. I have road bikes that will happily take 28's and then my Gunnar Crosshairs has a road-like geometry and will take up to 38's. So many beautiful bikes in this thread.

This is precisely my predicament. My favorite category of bike, but when I've got road and cross bikes, it never gets called into service.

Can anybody who also rides the current generation of Shimano short reach brakes like Ultegra 6800 and DA9000 tell me how their mid or long reach calipers feel in comparison? I have a bike with hydro disc now and a bike with Ultegra calipers and I can definitely tell a difference between them, but the Ultegra calipers definitely have all the stopping power I need, even in the mountains. Is it going to be a big difference going to the Grand Cru, the TRP, or the Shimano?

Big Dan

To me the Shimano R600 and R650 feel the same as a regular 7700 or 6500 brake calipers.

I'm in South Florida, so brake use is optional.

very nice rig. why the two top tubes?

because rivendell bikes are not heavy enough as it is, loaded down with steel forks, steel railed leather saddles, full cage pedals, and fancy waxed canvass luggage, so they throw in an extra top tube to keep the weight up.

Yeah... To me there was a noticeable improvement when I switched from 7800 to 9000 series brakes, and I'm hoping to move back to a more mountainous area soon so I'd really like a comparison with the current best in caliper braking from people who have serious descending.

I'm basically thinking I want to build a fat tire road racing bike for the mountains and don't want to give up the weight for disc or deal with it mechanically. If I give up a lot between the best modern calipers and mid-reach brakes, I might rethink (probably build to max out the pads on a short reach caliper).

Plus: Any thoughts on brake feel when mixing Shimano super SLR pull levers with these brakes?

:banana::banana:

That bike as pictured, with everything except for the front rack, but including Brooks, leather tape, obese tires, cross levers, pedals and the double top tube, weighs under 25lbs. Since I believe Grant says a useful bike begins around 25lbs, with the rack it qualifies.

I think the Whisky fork is for mid-reach only, you can't run a short reach caliper on it and hit the rim. It seems like a great option, particularly if you can't handle the looks of the Seven and Wound-Up forks.

Lets see your modern bikes with long reach sidepulls.

Title says it all... My next bike will be a mid-reach rim brake road bike... Still deciding on lugged steel F/F or titanium with the new Whisky fork. Lets see and talk about the bikes you have with the current gen of dual pivot mid reach brakes.

I know this thread is four pages long, but it started before I joined the site. Can anyone explain what these terms mean to the uninitiated?

Mid reach and long reach brakes have longer arms which let you fit taller/fatter tires on your bike provided the frame has clearance(fork blades/crown and brake bridge/stays). Some folks use the longer reach to run smaller 650B wheels and even fatter tires. The longer reach also allows room for fenders under the brake and above the tires. Some frames are designed for longer than normal reach brakes like my Milwaukee Road and you can't use regular modern Campy or Shimano (short reach) brakes. Some say mid-long reach brakes are less effective or whatever. Whatever. Mine will fit fenders and 28s.

I know this thread is four pages long, but it started before I joined the site. Can anyone explain what these terms mean to the uninitiated?

These terms apply to side-pull caliper brakes and describe the distance from the center of the mounting hole to the center of the braking surface of the rim.

Short reach brakes are what you normally find on road racing bikes. The mid and longer reach brakes are usually specified when the bike is going to be fitted with larger tires and/or fenders. Also, as mentioned before, long reach brakes are frequently used when converting 700C bikes to 650B wheels, which have a 19mm smaller radius. You swap from short to long reach brakes and change the wheels from 700C to 650B so you can fit bigger tires.

In general they have the following dimensions:

A short reach brake typically will adjust between 39-49mm.

A mid reach brake (aka normal reach) is typically 47-57mm.

A long reach brake is typically from 57-73mm.

Also, as the brakes get longer, the arms are usually wider, and may employ quick release mechanism that allow the caliper to open further to clear a larger, inflated tire.

This is precisely my predicament. My favorite category of bike, but when I've got road and cross bikes, it never gets called into service.

mistermo should change his name to misternuts :D

This bike lives in Colorado now and I couldn't be happier. Since he sold it to me it is getting all of my riding time. My normal ride is half dirt, half pavement, up hill for about an hour, then some 45 mph descents back home. Its about 2 pounds heavier than my Legend, but its more comfortable (especially on the GP4000 28s/wide rims), and a much better riding position for the solo rides I do. I'll keep my Legend for times I ride with other people, but this is the perfect bike for 95% of the riding I do.

What a great bike for just riding.

Thanks, I had no idea. I've purchased brakes a few times online and never saw any of these options, so I didn't know about them. Perhaps they're a bit specialist? Or not common on road bikes?

Soma Stanyan '18 Last year Soma bought back the Stanyan but this time for quill stems. I had the original Stanyan with polished lugs and love how it rode and handled but sold it in order to purchase a Black Mountain Monster Cross. 3 weeks ago American Cyclery had a great sale on this newest Stanyan '18 so I jumped at it.
Just finished building it up this week. These photos don't do the pearl white justice. I have a set of Soma SL Supple Vitesse 700x33 tires coming in today that will be put on this bike.

Lyle, you've posted this twice and I'm really curious about it -- can you clarify that it is indeed running mid-reach brakes? KHS's website only says "Tektro brake calipers" without mentioning that they're mid-reach, and specs 700x23 tires. I'm wondering if it's short-reach (standard) brakes.

Just picked this up of eBay for a great deal. Switched out the stock promax calipers to TRP RG957. I plan on changing out the cassette to 11-32 and will throw on some Ritchey bars that I already have. I started with WTB Exposure 34 tires that mounted up well on the stock DT wheels. Day 1 they measured 33mm and cleared easily but over a few days/rides they swelled up to 35mm and started to rub ever so slightly under effort. I just mounted some Gravelking 32 slicks. They measure 32 today, but will hopefully gain a mm or 2.
