For those of us who have been around the Paceline for a while, you couldn't ask for a more thoughtful contributor or generous buyer/seller than Ari. Well, here he is lending his thoughtful ways to the selection of UC Davis' first African American chancellor -- http://www.sacbee.com/news/local/education/article134044714.html

Ari studies history, so kind of interesting to be making some of it himself.

Just to be clear, I played only a very small role in the process. Put another way, don't blame me if he doesn't do a great job! Kidding aside, he seems like a remarkable scholar and leader. I'm very exciting that he'll be joining us and VERY relieved that the search is over.

I think he's a remarkable guy. I mean, we'll see once he gets here, but he seems great. As for the press attention, I can live without it and the inevitable hate mail that follows (I won't share some of the highlights, because this is a family-friendly establishment).

Congrats, Ari!

There were mixed feelings for him locally (for those who haven't clicked on the link; he was the Dean of Engineering at Georgia Tech, where I am working on my PhD), but I wish him all the best at UC Davis.

No Ari you didn't. You helped show others that brilliance comes in all people. Man, this is just too cool. Trust me we need more folks like yourself.

You got hate mail for heading a search committee? Seriously? Without getting into the specifics of what was said in the hate mail, what was the theme of it? What the hell could people possibly be upset about?

Work well done Ari, you certainly have my support in the current climate of the educational attack.

If I had to guess, I would say it had to do with race.

If you feel comfortable shooting me a PM, I'd love to hear more. On the one hand, I don't know any effective senior administrators who don't have at least a few detractors. On the other hand, local knowledge is very useful, and I'd love to know more about the man.

I guess this shouldn't surprise me, even in NorCal, but it still does...

I wish Gary May all the best. I think he'll be good for UCD. Thanks for your work on the selection committee, Ari!
