Looking for a road rim recommendation: what 700c clincher alloy caliper brake rim to go with some nice DA7900 hubs, 28f/32r drilling? (My drivetrain is 9 speed, so don't need 11s hubs.)

Rider is 180# and rides in hills. What is out there now? Pacenti and DT440's are not being considered for various reasons.

Spokes will probably be 2x front and 3x rear, but no decision beyond that.

Thanks for any info.

Why would you discount the DT440? From what I can tell it is one of the best rims in its class.

Unlimited budget? HED C2+
Budget-conscious? DT R460

Both great rims. I'm a big dude and have been riding R460s in 32/28 with (knock on wood) zero problems. Bonus is that the R460 can be setup tubeless if you/he choose/chooses.

I would consider easton R90SL, seems like a really nice rim and people really like them. If I was going to build something would either be this or Belgium plus.

Curious about the velocity quill but maybe too fragile for my taste. Also, some of the kinlins seem like decent rims at a good price. Also, at that weight I would go 28/24 but that is just me.

I'd go with HED rims, brake track is great and you can go tubeless (I recommend) if you want. Brakes for me DA's are as good as they get

H plus Son Archetype. Nice, easy to build, 23mm wide rims, very nice ride.

Forgot to mention that these will be run with tubes fwiw. Thanks for the recs so far. Hadn't heard of the Easton rim.

The reason I don't like the DT440 rim is through personal experience with remounting the tire after getting flats on the road. With some Vittoria tires and a full-sized frame pump, I could not get the tire beads to set on the rims. You need to get a lot of pressure in the tires before they seat entirely on the rim. Royal PITA. Happened too many times. For comparison, HED Belgiums have been no trouble whatsoever to use as far as seating tires on the rims in my experience.

Archetype if $$ is a concern. HED Belgium if not. Lots of people complain that the black brake track finish will wear and it will. It just shows you have been riding. HED has a slightly nicer finish and may be 10 - 15 grams lighter, otherwise not much difference. I have both and they were easy to build up without much touch up to get true. With 28/32, the wheels will be solid. You could use DT Revolution spokes at your weight without concerns.

Weird my 440s and corsa cx tires haven't given me any grief. I'm having some rr411 built up currently. I have run dt stuff almost exclusively for years.

When I run into a tire that won't go on easy, I find another tire!

Velocity A23 OC rear (www.velocityusa.com/product/rims/a23-oc-622); if you must have a matching rim, then an A23 up front.

I'm a BIG fan of OC rims; I've built a good number of them and the rears stay true much longer than symmetrical rims. It's dead obvious when building OC rear wheels that the left/right tension is much more even.

The DT411 also has an asymmetric. It is on my list for a rebuild on a 24 hole rear.

I'm 200+/- given the season and have been riding the r460s without any issues. Wider profile rim and tubeless ready if you feel the need. Ridden on a variety of surfaces with larger tires.

A DT411 front rim with R460 rear rim has crossed my mind.

Would love to hear more about that Easton R90SL rim, too.

In case no one has mentioned it, I'd recommend Open Pro rims. ;)

This. There have been no improvements in bicycle rims since 1996. i15 is wide enough. Don't believe the hype, folks. Wide rims are suck.
