Long story short, I got hold of three (3!!!) XTR brake cables for cheap.
Now, as i'm recabling my road bike, I was wondering if I could use them with ultegra 6700 brake leveres and cantis.
As always, thanks for pointing me the right way!

mmm probably not, unless the cable ends are shaped the same as road cable ends...which they probably arent.

arent mtb brake cable ends different from road ends?
unless im unaware of changes in cable end standards over the years.

You could sit on your front porch swing with a pair of pliers, flat file and several beers/bourbons and file the heads down to the road size/shape.

In no way is that time/effort worth what you saved on the cables, though.

No that won't work. Mtb bikes uses shimano wires and road bike levers takes campagnolo wires.

Aince the OP is speaking of brake cables. I dont think the mountain bike style cable end will work in any road lever. Campagnolo or any other relitavely modern road lever.

you want cheap? well, I may be too cheap for you, I will say that up front. I ordered like a megaton of these for $5 a pop and stored them in my garage, will last me a lifetime. Nothing special, in fact, some people would say it causes "inferior" shifting or braking, I have never found it to be so as I have used it on all my bikes. It brakes and shifts just fine. To me, cable is cable.

I might just splurge on some Jagwire elite link to match the nokon shifter cables i got for cheap.

Plus, tight bends and all that jazz!!

Sorry Weisan, more into good deals then cheap (probably just like you!)

Well, I'm half way in to a ride right now and my brakes work just fine.

Interesting. I would have thought the lever blade would not shut completely against the body with those wires in it. If the fit inside they are probably better than shimano road wires as these at least won't get stuck.

Yeah, I never thought of trying it until recently. Had some spare MTB cables that I will never use and was pleasantly surprised.

Cheaper is better, especially as this is my first time recabling a bike :D
