View Full Version : What does Strava consider a "climb"?

Yesterday I did 1646 feet (according to Strava) and it still says my highest climb was 15xx feet. So, just wondering, what is a "climb" according to Strava. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170309/909d01969fc6ddbae513dbee47cd84b9.jpg

Strava defaults to using your computers barometric sensor to determine elevation change. These sensors aren't always accurate - especially if you happen to experience a big change in pressure during the ride, from a front going by for example. Also, computer units don't have pressure sensors all together. In those cases, you can have strava "correct" the elevation data where they will attach elevation data they have collected and curated themselves or from other users on the same roads and append it to your activity. The elevation doesn't have to be associated with a "climb" to be counted. Just has to be measured as positive gain by the sensor.

I think it goes by the segment. You climbed a little bit past the longest existing segment. if you made a new segment that is a little longer, I think that would take over as your "highest climb".

I think it's this. I just checked mine and it has changed from 5,091 to 6,174 from a ride in 2014. I believe that someone created a slightly longer segment for White Mountain from Bristlecone Pine and that was picked up.

If you want credit for a longer climb, create a segment that reflects it.

Edit: My change could also reflect Strava's new elevation basemap, which is based on crowd sourced data from recognized barometric altimeters: https://support.strava.com/hc/en-us/articles/115000024864-Announcing-Strava-s-Elevation-Basemap

I suspect it's this. In my area there are a few segments that Strava considers Cat 4 climbs that are, in reality, flat roads. I suspect when those segments were first created there was some inaccurate elevation data that made it look like there was a huge elevation change that did not actually exist.

I know that sometimes, if I go back to a ride several days later, the elevation will be automatically corrected to match up to Strava's base maps.

Interesting.

I'm just using Strava on my phone if that matters. (Motorola Turbo)
