Women should be ruling the world and it saddens me that we are still in the place we are today.

My wife and daughter are two of my favorite people and both are better then me in every way. Every day should be a day to celebrate women.

Plus they smell nice.

Out of curiosity, does anyone here know many women who are taking the day off? My office seems to have fewer people than normal, but I'm not sure if it's just coincidence.

I don't know anyone who is not going to work. Several wanted to do so, but don't have a job that would allow them to take the time right now.

I like the overall concept of the "Day Without Women", but in actuality it is really more of a "Day Without Upper Middle Class Women in Positions of Privilege Who Can Afford to Take a Day Off".

I am one of 70 staff members at my school. There are 8 guys on staff.

We would have to close school if the awesome female teachers didn't come in.

The successful Upper Middle Class Women in Positions of Power that I know are working today. One doesn't get ahead by pouting and whining.

Have not heard of this, and don't see an overabundance of females in office today, then again it's pretty male dominated head count here.

I do know this much.........my wife is at work today. :p

I told my wife that Day Without Women includes NO SHOPPING. :p

Although it's illegal to do, I'd prefer to ONLY hire women for our field engineering positions. So far, they've generally been more organized, more driven, and more serious about the job. And as a result, they make more than the men in similar roles with similar experience.

So, in my experience, they don't need some politician telling them they need help to get ahead - they do it on their own!

It took a lot of "pouting" and "whining" to get their right to vote

Very proud of my wife. Partner at a law firm who protects pension funds and the like. She goes against the toughest of the tough. Her kindness, passion, and grace are just amazing. Personally, never knew I could love someone so much. And every year I love her more.

Of course you do...she lets you ride your bike in the middle of nowhere!
And even let you into the house soaking wet probably smell like a dog....

Yep. That's exactly what they want.

Yea, man.

But this is the political process, isn't it? People you don't like win, people you like win, maybe nobody you like ever wins.... just goes around, comes around, sometimes never comes around. I've never once voted for a candidate I believed in, myself.. have you?

But you definitely HAVE to let it go.

Look what happened with Obama. How many conservatives just never let it go? How much bull**** went on because people just couldn't let it go? How much work never got done, because constituents needed to see resistance for no better reason than resistance?

You really want that to be you, this time around?

Let it go. Look to 2020 and make sure it never happens again - preferably by bringing in instant-runoff voting, like most other civilized western societies have already had for years.

That line is a bit trite, no?

That said, i find the "appropriation" of March 8 to be highly ironic.
This is a "communist" holiday in the sense that it's well known in countries once or currently ruled by a communist party. It has never garnered much attention in the States until this year, and i presume it's because it occurs relatively soon after the Women's March and helps to keep the ideas of the march in public view.

However, one should be cognizant of the connotations behind the day. And the connotation is similar to that of May Day (when compared to Labor Day), both of which once heavily associated with the USSR...

The earliest Women's Day observance was held on February 28, 1909, in New York and organized by the Socialist Party of America.
The United Nations began celebrating in International Women's Day in the International Women's Year, 1975. In 1977, the United Nations General Assembly invited member states to proclaim March 8 as the UN Day for women's rights and world peace.

The OP said "Happy International Woman's Day" and the first guy to respond makes a Trump joke. If you do a simple "search" by username you'll find there is a pattern.

Just.......let......it..........go

Talking about western civilization ... reminds me of one of my favorite quotes. Shortly after Indian independence, Gandhi was interviewed by the BBC and the reporter asked him what he thought about British civilization. "I think," Gandhi said, "it would be a good idea."

without using wikipedia, have you heard of International Children's Day and know when it is? I haven't read the wikipedia page, but would bet dollars to donuts that the UN adopted it as well (and i do know when it is for that matter).

the point is that regardless of how it was started, it became intricately linked with communist regimes. From rhetorical standpoint, one should always be cognizant of the connotations the same way that the once neutral word comrade has taken on a connotation.

the irony here is that you had left-leaning people long having been accused of being useful-idiots; while a grossly broad brush, a small subset of them actually were and went great length to defend the USSR (or even emigrating from the U.S.).

This past election has turned many left leaning against Russia (not that they liked Russia beforehand). But surely one have to acknowledge the irony that now a substantial subset of this crowd is now co-opting a holiday made most famous by communist regimes

In 1975 it would have been very easy for the UN to just pick a different day.
