Swithcing to compact and need new BB

I have decide to get a compact crank fot 6 Gap in Sept. I also need to replace my BB as it is time. So the question is if I say with the same octalink BB and get a Ritchey do I get the same BB spindal width? If I swith to square taper do I also get the same BB width?

Also I hvae heard that the regulat front mech will work fine is this true?

Geoff, look at the spec. for the crank and that will decide your BB.
Yeah, you can get some fr. der. to work with compact however you'll not regret using a CD fr. derailleur such as IRD. I reluctantly made the switch...in the middle of a ride no less...and never looked back.
