View Full Version : Thin and warm cycling cap?

I have a great silk weight balaclava that was made by Patagonia many years ago. I'd like another similar but without face and neck protection. I'm not seeing much these days that is even similar in weight. I'd like to have a skull cap kind of thing, that can just cover my ears or fold up compactly. Thin and comfy for 50-60 degree weather.

Suggestions?

(for an XL or XXL head)

When you say "cap", do you mean with a bill? If not, Icebreaker and Smartwool both make excellent lightweight toques (beanies for the non-Canadians here) that fit very well under helmets and definitely have the capacity for big heads. I particularly like Icebreaker's "Pocket Beanie". Stuff like that is on sale right now, too! And it's wool.

I bought an Icebreaker Chase Beanie this fall for this exact use, and it has exceeded my expectations, it's super thin but still provides plenty of warmth.

Can't say enough good things about this Ibex cap. Keeps my head warm here at 7200 feet for much of year. (My personal effective temp range with one of these under a helmet is from about 40 degrees down to 10 degrees, depending on wind speed and effort level).

Ibex skimmer and meru are also good options. The meru is thicker and warmer. The skimmer has better ear coverage.

The Craft beanie is my favorite. Been using one for several years now. I prefer the non-wind block version but I have two of each. I wear them all the time when not on the bike too.

I live in the SF Bay Area and make frequent trips to Reno. Temps down to low 30's until I need something more substantial.

Check out the Castelli one. Nice and thin, breathes well, fits under a helmet easily and keeps me warm.

I own this Smartwool beanie:

http://www.smartwool.com/shop/men-accessories-trainingbeanies/mens-phd-hyfi-training-beanie-sw018006?variationId=001

It keeps odors to a minimum, but when it gets wet and starts drying you will smell of something reminiscent of a wet sheep.

Thanks for all the recommendations.

I ordered the Craft as it looks like maybe its thin and stretchy. It also comes in sizes, which might mean it will fit my head.

I'll report back soon.

Got the Craft cap today. Its just what I hoped for - thin, stretchy and comfortably big enough for my 7 3/4 noggin.

Plus one on icebreaker. I use this oasis balaclava for when it gets to be sub 42 degrees outside. Super thin and it's wool so it still keeps you warm even when you sweat.

Yup, Icebreaker.

I picked one up a few years ago and had I realized how much h I would come to love it I would have bought three of them.

Every onc in a while when I can't find it I have that moment of regret where I feel like I've lost a good friend. Then I find it in the pocket of some other jacket ...

Check out the merino beanie from on one uk, it's far and away the best cycling beanie I've ever used and they're cheap and last forever.

my favorite cool weather hat is the rapha merino one. it's thin enough that it wedges under a helmet easily without adding bulk and keeps you warm between 40-50 degrees or so. above that i go to a standard cotton cycling cap (rothera is nice).

btw, i also wear the rapha one all winter just in everyday life too. it's warm but thin enough that my yuge head doesn't look even yuger.

here's a link, but look in the sale bin too. the new price is stupid high (duh, rapha). http://www.rapha.cc/us/en_US/shop/merino-hat/product/MHT05XXBLKXXX

I got a super lightweight smart wool beanie from Rei earlier this winter. It keeps my head plenty warm and is as this as it gets. Pretty cheap too

Another balaclava option is from Outlier. Never tried it but I dig their slim dungarees pants. https://shop.outlier.nyc/shop/retail/doublefine-merino-balaclava.html
