I'm having a cross bike built up and thinking late 80s neon fade for the paint and then hang a bunch of black bits/wheels on this thing. Not looking for classy here looking more for hypercolor meets New Coke meets early Miami Vice. Looking for more inspiration about color choices. Anyone have pictures of anything like this they are pleased with? Not looking at harlequin paints or splatters or other relics from this era. thanks

also posted "across the hall" but wanted to get some input here as well.

1991 Serotta NHX. Colors were one of the stock options on the Colorado II that year. Fluorescents are prone to fade but have held up very well on this bike. Check out circa 1990 Kleins, especially MTBs.

I bought a '96 Aeolus at the Madison swap years ago, primarily because of the blue/green flipflop paint. Not sure if it's a true fade but it looks great. Catalog photo doesn't begin to do it justice.

1989 Colorado II. I believe the colors are Onyx/Magenta. The black has metallic that only shows close up in the sun. This was team paint on a women's team, the name of which escapes me.

This bike was my one and only link to Serotta when Serotta was not as the lawyer/dentist bike or the faster-backwards custom bike maker Serotta was later besmirched to be, but as a racebike from Serotta's short linkage with the European peloton.

This was my only Serotta because it was the only time the brand in its history had any relevance to me. I still own this frame - at one time I had plans to turn it into a fixie but it's got collector value to not just beat it up in an urban jungle.

There are no spokes. If I recall correctly, those are Kevlar threads incorporated with a carbon fiber webbing inside of a traditional aluminum rim. It was called the "disk drive" or more commonly the "Tioga Tension Disk" although it was made by Sugino.

Basically, it was billed as being this cure-all upgrade while in reality it was a bit of a one-trick pony. It really did offer compliance and aero at the rear so was a real advantage on the downhill courses of the time, before rear suspension came onto the scene. In all other aspects however, it was a step backwards, performance-wise, for most people.

But, it made such an awesome noise and looked so damn cool that it didn't matter. Everyone, including myself, wanted one. (I still do)

Those neon fade Serottas at the start of this thread are amazing.

No others stack up. In spite of being a Vanilla lover, I hated those Klein tribute paintjobs. I felt like they cheated on those.

The Bishop track bike is amazing too.

there have been many amazing paint jobs put up here. in my mind, the Rob English and the Bishop Butterfly track bike take the cake. not sure i ride fast enough for either of them to be the model for my next paint job. sort of like high end carbon wheels with big logos. you don't want to be the guy getting dropped off the back with a 3K+ wheelset...

one thing that is clear to me after looking at a whole bunch of fades is that I do prefer a long transition rather than more abrupt color block sort of appearance.

They may be lost to the ether - I can't find my old photos of my Klein Rascal, it faded from a midnight purple kind of thing to a color I named "mating season magenta" in the back.

It was a lesser Klein, but the paint work was still outrageous.

I guess I like fades between related hues. You look and you initially think it's the light striking a one-color paint job, only it's not! Specialized did some good fades of this kind in the nineties - ultra-marine blue to royal blue, that kind of thing.

No, started out as hexagons in concept. Just supposed to be a geometric shape. I turns out to have a fish scale look to me and since I like boating and fishing I think it works out great

Picked it up in Utah. Paint was a little flat but I a paint polish on it to bring back the rich shine.

I'm trying to find that out myself. Right now a lot of folks seem to think it might have been the Belgium builder Martelly.

Martelly responded back to my inquiry. He made it in 1985 and it is Columbus SL. He also mentioned having several vintage frames on hand for sale in case anyone is interested.
