Does the King R-45 rear hub have that same annoying "angry bee" buzzing noise when coasting as their other hubset? Was thinking about having a wheelset built using them, but if it has that same irritating noise, I'm passing.

Different, but still that buzz. I think it sounds like a higher pitched whine than the regular King hubs.

not as loud as the classics, but yes - it's still the same basic sound...

my loudest for sure, but also my most bulletproof in the rain so far.

...sounds like a Stuka Dive Bomber....OK, I'm passing then. Thanks, guys.

They sound like a bee but they don’t seem much louder than an actual bee :)

I do not even notice them anymore. Not an issue for me.

If you're a fan of silent. Maybe the slight buzz will annoy you. Get some 9000 or 9100 (those exist yet?) Hubs.

Used them for a couple of years and now hardly notice the sound.

Same, after many wet years still smooth!

King hubs in general are much quieter when you service them at the recommended interval. Whenever I hear a super loud one I cringe as to the state of the internals.

King R45's are quite a bit quieter than the Classics. If they aren't, they need a cleaning and lube. I always would be called out on my Classics. Never on my R45's. In a group of a few riders, the sound of R45's disappears, as it does with any traffic noise or breeze.

And frankly, I've had pretty much all the hubs out there at one time or another and while I would also say I love Dura Ace and Record hubs, which are nearly silent, I've never seen others that hit the sweet spot for noise, reliability, serviceability, spoke geometry, construction, and so on. If noise is that sensitive a matter to me, I'd be using grease on your chain, covering my helmet in a windshield, and wearing earplugs to block out road noise.

eh... these days it's kinda silly to obsess over the quietest hubs. unless maybe you ride alone all the time. once you're in a group, there will be enough loud hubs, coupled with deep rims to amplify them, that this absolute quiet some people seem to seek on the bike is completely impossible.

There is a soft buzz but the R45 hubs are actually pretty quiet compared to many other hubs with loud ticking noises generated by strong pawl springs. I find my White Industries louder and more intrusive. Helmet noise generated when I'm going 20mph and faster is way worse, in my case.

I was told by one guy that if I don't like the King's noise...DON'T STOP PEDALING. Well...OK.

I'd call R45s quieter than anything but Shimano, of hubs that I regularly hear.

Well ... YEAH! We buy $1000 wheels and put them on $5000 frames with $3400 electronic gruppos to ... coast?

People who coast a lot go slow.

R45s do NOT sound like angry bees. They are not Shimano quiet, but mine are quieter than DT Swiss 240s or White Industries T11s.

Maybe not angry bees but slightly annoyed bees. :p

We seriously need to calibrate bee buzzing.

I'd put this at bees buzzing happily over honey. Make that about a -2 db buzz?

The classic hubs were loud and I considered them annoying, the R45s just seem to make a pleasant hum and like others have said can't beat the reliability. Love these hubs.
