I've often wondered how the bicycle industry goes about properly processing a high-end frameset prior to and after chrome plating. Many of the older Italian road frames featured this treatment.

I would assume these higher quality manufacturers would use top-notch platers who incorporated the required steps to prevent damage, but I can't help but wonder if the process involves flushing the interior of the tubes presents its own set of problems no matter who was doing it.

I know there can be potentially destructive issues if this process isn't carried out correctly, especially the matter of hydrogen embrittlement.

Is there anything to look out for, or do yourself to prevent any potential damage, if you have a chromed frame?
