I'm thinking about purchasing a wire shelving unit like this one, removing the inner shelves, and hanging 3 bikes inside of it. The weight shouldn't be an issue, but I'm concerned it won't be too stable with the inner shelves removed. Anyone tried or seen something like this done?

turning into something like this

I'm trying to avoid drilling into walls or building something out of 2x4's. Hanging them vertically like this is the best solution for my apartment

This saris rack would work if it were narrower and you could adjust the bike spacing

The problem you will have is that the middle shelves gives rigidity to the structure, w/o them the cube will be quite flimsy unless you like tie the frame to the wall maybe?

Well I was thinking I could take a bolt cutter and cut out the inner part of those shelves and leave the outside sections to connect all the legs

Screw a 2x4 horizontally onto the wall with 3 1/2 inch sheetrock screws after locating the studs, buy some J-hooks and you are in business. You could get 3 bikes in a 3 foot space if you hang 2 bikes up and 1 bike down. Countersink the screwheads to be sure they are at least 1/4 inch below the surface of the 2x4 to be sure you gripping into the stud. Stain or paint the board to match furniture or trim and get the plastic coated hooks to match or accent. If you locate the studs, you only need 2 screws and about 1 1/2 inches of thread to hold 50 - 75 pounds. When its time to move, remove the board, putty up the 2 screwholes and you are done. $25 max for supplies and 2 hours for construction.

Put the two middle shelves close to either end of the outside shelves.

@steelbikerider

I can't drill into the walls. Nothing more than little nails for photos, etc

Cheap, stable.

I just looked at their website, they don't seem to be selling them anymore.

It's advertised to hang up to 6 bikes, but I kept it at 4 to maintain a safe distance between my bikes...:D

Ive worked filling spaces with those shelving units before. Its true they may not be as sturdy with just one at the bottom and one shelf at the top. If its big enough you could add a second shelf either at the top or bottom for added structural gains and gain more storage.

I also recall those companies making parts which attach to only two of the legs, if they do that, and still are I would look into buying the pieces bit by bit and designing a unit you really need rather than getting a stock shelf and ending up with extra parts you don't need but paid for.

They still sell them. http://t.harborfreight.com/mobile-bike-storage-61231.html

I have one, use it to store all the kids' bikes. Works well

not particularly cheap, but i have one of these for my apartment's storage cage (which is too small to hold a bike horizontally): https://www.walmart.com/ip/Minoura-DS2100-Tancho-Esse-Bike-Stand/31976407

it's easy to load the bike in and out (no lifting required), and you can still use it as a horizontal stand for getting the bike ready to roll.

Oh, that's good to know.
I usually wait for a 20% coupon. Got mine for about $40 three years ago and still loving it!

You could build something like the Saris rack out of 2x4s. The final dimensions can be based on your space requirements.

Reminds me back in the day when I used to collect Garands and go shooting a couple of times a week and purchased old military Lake City ammo by the bulk. Got rid of all of it when my focus went mainly to cycling. Probably should have kept some of it but who'd of thought we have an idiot megalomaniac running the country.

The wire rack is cheaper than the saris one

What about re-constructing the general shape of the wire rack out of 1/2" galvanized black pipe? Flanges for feet and to support a Plywood top shelf, a T about half way down on 2 sides and the back with cross braces for strength to keep it from racking. The lengths of pipe aren't super cheap compared to something like the wire rack, but it will last forever. Could put hooks into the plywood top as hangers, or run another piece of galvanized across like a closet rod so you could slide them side to side to fit better.

I built a nice shelf for our bathroom using this method. Free standing behind the toilet, redwood cedar shelves (great for high moisture environments).

I decided to make my guest bedroom into a bike salon (easily shiftable back to an actual guest room), and I'm finally working out some details. Today marks significant progress! Pictured mount/shelf x3 will accommodate the most used part of the fleet. And yes, I will be adding a cushion for the carbon to rest on.
