Yeah... don't know what I was thinking, but I pulled the cables all the way out when replacing.
I found a strong magnet to be a lifesaver getting the cables through the internal routing areas. Electrical tape on the magnet head to avoid scratches on your paint/carbon. Also, for the RD cable over the bottom bracket area, just remove the seat post and use a flashlight to see the cable. With some finagling, you can get it to go down the DS seat stay and then back to the magnet. You can remove the derailleur hanger if it won't go through.
