I recently picked up a very nice Serotta CX frame. It has a non-original IF fork with a 1" threadless steer tube. While mocking up the stem, I used an X4 in the bin with a shim. It looks...not great.

Spacers will be all. Lack and steer tube will likely be cut shorter, but still a lot of problems here. How best to address? I want to still use a 31.8 bar, but the stem is too beefy.

Does anyone make thicker spacers? Or a narrower cable hanger? I might go with mini Vs.

With a longer shim you can use 1 1/8" spacers which should make things look better.

Outfits like BBB parts make 1 inch spacers in both black and silver. Come on a card with 4 spacers, all different sizes.

From memory i think it is 2.5, 5, 10 and 20

A more svelte stem would do it. A Ritchey 4-Axis, 3T, Fizik or some such would work well I think. From personal experience the steerer clamp OD on the Ritchey actually matches up nicely with 1" aluminum spacers.

The X4 has a very beefy look, I think it would look better with the x2 or another slimmer stem.

Also, keep it to all black spacers and it will look less broken up.

Cool bike!

If the fit is good. Remove some spacer/steerer. If you can. Use a fork mounted hanger for your brakes. X4 is such a great stem for this set up. But like others have mentioned...it's a bit beefy looking [emoji14]

Wheels manufacturing. Cross/dirt bike..put it together, go get it dirty. Not sure of the 'lot of problems' here. Color? Sorry, don't get it. :help:

Another simworks suggestion. I'd probably also look at the Dirty Rhonda and run the cable through the stem.

Syntace or Ritchey WCS 4-Axis or Nitto Lugged or Simworks will have relatively skinny clamp and extension.

Nitto:

Simworks

Maybe you could also find a nice Salsa...

or this one is decent enough:

(Be careful that if the stem has a removable faceplate, it has 4 bolts, or at least 2 bolts with a special "lip" to take up some load. Forged a bit better than welded for long-term use.)

Those steel 1" Salsa and Nitto stems, especially, are nice, but I think OP is looking to use 31.8 mm handlebars.

I think that a silver Thompson stem would look more "svelte". I think the issue is more about the black stem just does not flow in the scheme

I wanted to use slightly more spacers than recommended for a 1" steerer. I thought that one big one would provide better support than 2 or 3 small ones. I went to a local tubing supply store, bought a piece of steel tubing of the appropriate outer diameter and made my own "custom" spacer with a hacksaw and hand files. It was easy and looked perfect.

+1 on Simworks stems--could look great. That Dirty Rhonda could kill two birds w/ one stone.

We may need more pics of the full bike to make proper assessment. Ok, I just want to see the thing. Beautiful green.
