So I was playing with it today and it sorta scared the bejesus out of me as I was in stop and go-ish kind of traffic on the freeway. It seemed to be doing a good job of applying the brakes at the right time, but I wondered if it was programmed to truly "ensure" that I won't bang into the car in front of me.

I do assume the brake lights are going off and on as the brain is automatically applying the brakes.

Piece by piece it's getting automated.

If you have the driver's package, then you also have crash avoidance, which ensures that the car will automatically brake as soon as possible. I doubt it is 100% effective (assertion) e.g. factors of speed etc.

In your case, I would say yes (assumption).
