I am hoping to get a custom this year and I have been thinking strongly of a Stainless bike.

Is anyone using this material that is not too crazy expensive?

Define not too expensive :)

Quiring Cycles, perhaps? Last I checked, a custom stainless frame (Columbus XCR) was $2,300.

Define that. I think most, US based makers of SS frames, the price will be 'about' that of most titanium..$3000-ish.

It all depends on the maker but I had a stainless, 953, lugged Waterford and it rode just like my R-22 lugged steel Waterford using TT non stainless pipes.

YMMV and all that.

Alex Meade has shown some lovely stainless bikes here and across the hall. I have no idea what he charges but it would be worth looking him up...

I am sure there are plenty of great options, but if I were looking for a stainless bike Dave Andersen (http://www.andersoncustombicycles.com/index.html#bicycles) would be on my short list. I have only seen his work at NAHBS, but I thought it was exceptional ....

I'm not trying to troll here, but a curious question: what would make you pick stainless steel over titanium for a custom frame?

(If you're looking at lugged stainless, I guess that answers that question.)

Couldn't be a nicer person and more skilled to work with. I think his prices are reasonable and perhaps the fact he does his own paint helps. Love mine.

Good question. I do like lugged but I may or may not end up with it lugged. I also like the ride of steel and I have heard that SS is about the same while titanium is a different experience.

Thank you. That looks like a wonderfully crafted bike.

Would Elephant do stainless? Looks like you're in Spokane.

DK has been knocking some stainless out of the park...not sure of pricing though.

A bit of stainless Onesto action... (http://forums.thepaceline.net/showthread.php?t=115818&highlight=stainless&page=49)

I will offer you $500 for that bike now :)!! Love it. Peg was considered when I bought my one and only custom (for me) steel frame, but I opted for something more 'current'.

It remains a Holy Grail bike for me - its just something you need to try sometime in your life - a bike from the master. Same goes for a Sachs, but I have had a chance to ride one of those (it was nice too !)

Not a bargain frame by any means!

I don't know what he charges, but I'll second the recommendation for a Quiring. I have one and love it.

$1650 for a DeSalvo: http://www.desalvocycles.com/bikes/steel-road/

Not sure if that counts as "not too expensive"

That's not stainless steel pricing

Anderson is probably the go to guy if you don't want to afford Ellis, Kirk or Dario and also want to bypass the smaller boutiques (IF, FF)

See that is why it is always YMMV - this was my custom built Quiring and the quality and working with Scott was top notch - but I much preferred the ride of my Ti bikes.

I have seen Alex Meades bikes in person and they are very nice.

When I'm out riding it, I'll often think 'I should thank Jeff for selling me this thing'.
So, Jeff, thanks for selling me the Quiring!

Yeah he is hopelessly backed up with the NFE. My buddy had him build up a MTB and he loves it.

I would own one of his bikes in a Heart beat. Not sure he is working with stainless.

Here is a list of all the framemakers that are (supposedly, according to KCA...YMMV) working with the KVA MS3 stainless steel tubing. There are a lot of them.

You'd need to visit all their website, though, to get pricing:

Another vote for Dave Anderson. If I ever buy a custom steel rig, it will be one from him. Check out his flickr gallery.
