I'm about to build up a new wheel set to use for 70% tarmac and 30% sandy ranch roads.

Have narrowed the rim choice down to two and wanted to solicit feedback on the H+ Sons Archetype (http://www.bikehubstore.com/H-Plus-Son-Archetype-23mm-Rim-p/archetype.htm) and Kinlin XR 31T OC (http://www.bikehubstore.com/C31-p/c31-oc.htm) / XR22T (http://www.bikehubstore.com/C22w-p/c22.htm) combo( same 24mm width, but 31mm vs 21mm depth ).

Predisposed to favor the welded Archetype's given their solid rep but the Kinlin's are 1mm wider, tubeless ready and available in an off center version. I'm ambivalent regarding the tubeless option, but the off center and slightly wider rim is appealing. Am I over thinking the options or off base in thinking the off-center pairing with a Record hub as important for optimizing build strength?

Looking for feedback, what say you?

I run a 24hole Kinlin xr31 OC for my rear wheel and it has been great. Super stiff and seems to hold true better than my 28h Pacenti.

I've built wheels with both these rims. both were uses for mostly road racing but some gravel and whatnot.

The XR31 is an awesome rim, I was very happy with the stiffness, how easy it was to build, and the way they felt out on the road. I built this wheelset 20/24 radial front, radial non drive, and 2x drive. Sapim Laser spokes. BHS hubs.

The XR22 is not a rim I would recommend. Even using more spokes and crosses the wheel felt noodley which killed all the fun that I felt with the XR31 rims. The XR22 is more narrow so the tires gets that light bulb shape which doesn't help the ride feel. These wheels flex a lot under effort, but they are light. I built them 24/28 with 2x front and rear and Sapim Laser spokes. BHS hubs.

He XR22 is the same width as the XR31. Are you thinking of a different rim?

You're right, I was comparing it to the XR200. Don't buy that rim, it sucks.

No doubt the H Plus Sons Archetype's are a fine option, however with the Kinlin 31T's being tubeless ready, available OC and a wee bit wider I opted for them.

Ended up going with the Kinlin 31T/ 31T OC front and rear and forgoing the XR22T notion on the front. Not being petite @ 230#, it made the most sense to not worry about the marginal weight savings but to go for the more robust build. Appreciate the input.

Thx

Laser spokes doesn't help stiffness either, thin spokes.

November Wheels recently commissioned a wind tunnel test of several current deep aluminum rims. The Kinlin XR31T came out very well. The report of the test and methodology is on the November Wheels Blog (http://www.novemberbicycles.com/blog/).
