I'm leaving next Thursday and would like to do some riding. I'll need to rent a bike. Any recommendations? I assume I need to bring shoes, pedals & clothes. Can helmets be rented?

Bike Works on the way into Kona from the airport has a big selection of high end rental bikes. When I rented, I brought pedals and an adjustable stem which they put on at no charge. I don't know about helmet rental, but a helmet is easy to carry on.

Cold now on Long Island, so bundle-up :)
…or did you mean Block Island? (cold there too!)

I thought this sort of thread involving cycling in idyllic locations was banned in January and February.
We need to put a stop to the taunting. ;)

Last time I was in Kona I rented a bike from these guys.

Worked out great-
Lots of good riding in Kona- just stay away from Queen K- That is for Triathletes.
You can climb up on the ridge above Kailua and ride either north or south.
One of my favorite rides is south to Captain Cook- down to the beaches down that way- then back up on one of the little roads that goes through.
Can also ride north to Waimea-
There are many 15-20 minute climbs in Kona- the Hillside above town is littered with them.
Can go up Kaloko road if you want to climb to 4000 feet close to town (it is steep)-
Can climb the volcano- but it is overrated.
You can PM me if you want to know more or want to know anything specific.
I am in Maui right now- Thought I would try something other than the big island.

Me and my wife rented mountain bikes on the big island and had a blast, but that was 20 years ago...
On the volcano, there were lots of groups like this: van up, ride down, slammed seatposts and full-face helmets, didn't even have to pedal once.

We brought our own bikes, but joined one of the BikeWorks shop rides in Kona. Really nice group of people. Terrible riders (in terms of group cycling skills) but a wonderfully enthusiastic bunch who welcomed outsiders with open arms.

When we went to Alaska in 2008 there was a similar ride [sic] out of Skagway. We had fun despite -- or perhaps because of? -- the ultra-remedial aspect of the cycling. When we got to the bottom of the mountain a lovely little old lady who was in our group came up to me & my wife and said "I saw you pedalling the entire time, you must be so tired!"

Check out Lance's Strava account....he was riding there a few weeks ago and did a ton of riding. Regardless of your stance on the guy it might give you good ideas for riding locations, as he typically doesn't ride on busy/dangerous roads.
