this weekend, my ten-year-old son got his first real road bike.
he's been riding his mtb with me for a few years now. mostly, he takes me out for a few laps of the neighborhood to warm me up for my rides.
he's always been a bit in the shadow of his older brother, the football and lacrosse star. but cycling has become his thing, his brother having shown no interest. it's something he does better than his brother, and it's the one thing he does just with me.
so i bought him this cool little trek, the only bike i could find in his size. he loves it.
we rode yesterday. and this morning. this afternoon he asked me to hook it up to the computrainer. 3 miles, averaged 82 watts, hit a peak of 278 watts as he sprinted the last 100 meters.
later, he went out for a few laps on his own.
when we were out this morning, after having warmed up, he told me he wanted to do beechwood - a short but nasty hill in the neighborhood.
watching those little legs make it to the top was pure joy, as pure as it gets.
a very refreshing reminder of what this sport is really all about.
