I have been in a great spot recently with the wheel sets I wanted. Now I mucked everything up and am going with a new 11 speed drivetrain. My wheels are all 10 speed: c35 tubbies with 7900 hubs and Tune Mig/Mag hubs with Pacenti 23 rims for clincher/tubeless days. I've got several options:

a) sell the wheels and get 11 speed wheels

b)buy a conversion cassette of some sort like the Edco or the machine shop in Montreal that will modify 11 speed cassettes to fit on 10 speed hubs

c) Try dropping the smallest cog of an 11 speed cassette and making that work

Maybe there are other options? What to do?:help:

I did B

You can put a spacer on when you get 11 speed wheels.

What component group? I'm assuming Shim/SRAM otherwise you don't have an issue.

b) don't they modify the freehub and not the cassette?

jtek adapter. Inexpensive and work great.

This.

I've also had good luck with the machining route. Guy here does it for $30.

Maybe I'm completely mistaken, but I've always been under the impression that all you need to do is pull off the 10sp freehub body and replace it with an 11sp freehub body, and then re-dish the wheel.

If I'm wrong, someone needs to invent that quick!

Yeah, can't you just swap the freehub?

Who is that? More info please....

The 7900 hubs are not able to go to 11 as far as I know. The Tune hubs are the older version which are not upgradable as well.

IMO -

send both of those rear wheels to a competant wheel builder and have the rear hubs swapped out for something 11-sp.

11-sp is here and is here to stay. 5800 cassettes are dirt cheap and easy to change gear ratios at will without having to kludge together compromised options for the rear.

that should be reasonable cost and keep you rolling with the wheels you like.

Yeah, can't you just swap the freehub?

There will be no direct swaping for those hubs. And many others as well. Bummer.
I set up a friends bike with only 10 cogs and it works great. Missing the 11. Well, not exactly missing, just not there.

i tend to agree.
it's something you'll do eventually so there's no point in waiting. you'll only spend money trying to put it off.

I would go with A unless you have like 5 pairs of wheels then B might be better. I bet the 11 speed wheelset will now be 12, 13 compatible too

It is in times like this that I am glad I use campy

I took the 10 speed Shimano freehub off my Easton wheel and put the Campy freehub on with a Chorus 11 speed cassette using a Shimano drivetrain. Works fine but not quite as good as a Shimano 11 speed cassette on a Shimano hub.

So A.. Final answer.

The Wheels Manufacturing conversion cassette works just fine on my Dura Ace 7850 hubs. They include lots of thin spacers so you can play around and get it to match up with your other wheels. I change out between a DA 9000 wheelset and my DA 7850 wheelset and don't even have to make rear derailler tweak. It claims to be spaced for Campy 11 but Zinn at Velonews claims the spacing is the same for all 11 speeds. It works. The only problem is gearing choices are limited. Last I checked, Excel Sports Boulder had some in stock.

Being a machinist, I machined 1/16 off the back of of a 6800 cassette and works great on my gravel bike. Much cheaper than other options, no re-dishing or the expense of a cassette carrier.

As does Wheels, buy direct. Great company, known the owner for years.

Someone here has machined a 7700 freehub to accept 11s, I don't see why 7900 will be any different. I've also done it on two HED wheels.
